Guest agent.m Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 What are the plus points to owning a psp??? This isnt trying to be a negative comment honest!!! Im just interested in why modaco users are buying a psp when they have a smartphone and some have mda etc. If its for games then cool! but i have a ps2 and hardly use it anymore except for dvd's. If someone could sell the idea to me i might just shell out for one :o
Guest agent.m Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 To help a few peeps in the same situation as me that are considering a psp then try this may help http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/Sony_PSP/4505...-2.html?tag=top
Guest Alsicole Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 I bought one for my husband as he didn't have a portable gaming device and he likes the more complex racing games like Burnout. When I bought it I got 2 games, 1 movie and a case/accessory pack as a deal. Having watched the UMD movie on it I can say it's in another league compared to both my PPC devices. The screen is very clear and the quality is just awesome. I've ordered another PSP for myself, along with a bunch of UMD movies. It's not a device I'll carry all the time, so I'll still watch smaller videos/TV episodes on my S110, but for long journeys, holidays, away at conferences etc. The PSP will be joining me. I guess it's a matter of preference and how it would fit into your life. I think the quality of the PSP screen is better than those little seat-back screens on planes for instance, plus you get to choose your own movie.
Guest inspectorgadjet Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 Well I was very undecided about getting a PSP myself until I actually tried one out and saw how brilliant the quality is. It is a far better gaming experience than any other portable console available right now. Nothing else compares with it for graphics or flow of gaming. It really delivers on it's promise for PS2 like gaming. Also, nearly all games come ready for WLAN multiplayer. How many smartphone/pda or other portable game consoles can offer that? Also, it frees up the tv, so if you want to play a game, the rest of your household can still use the tv. As for movies, I will agree with Alsicole. It is in a league of it's own. I will admit that I absolutely refuse to pay the prices they're asking for UMD movies at the moment. I don't see the point in paying more for a movie that is made for lower quality devices than tv when I already probably own the DVD (My collection is over 1600 now). I would much rather spend the time converting movies to a decent quality myself and putting them on memory stick. I know it's kinda expensive right now, but I still think it's worth the money. It's a very nice toy. :o
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 I'm looking at getting one after seeing Ridge Racer. The graphics are stunning, it's like having a top of the range gaming system in your hands :( Than again it is top of the range :o
Guest Alsicole Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 I think in terms of games the PSP and a Pocket PC/Smartphone are quite different creatures though. The kind of games that are very popular on PDA and Smartphone devices are generally simpler and much easier to pick up/put down. They're suited to waiting in line, playing for a few minutes when you're early for an appointment etc and many of the most popular titles support this. The PSP is less of a pocket-sized device and so you probably wouldn't take it to the pub with you, but you would carry a PDA/Smartphone. Games for the PSP can be much more involved, but because of loading times, saving and closing down are probably less suited to a quick 5 minute game. As someone who already owns 3 PDAs/Smartphones, a Nintendo DS and is soon to get their PSP, I'd say there's room for all of them as they each have unique features that make them different enough for me to want all of them. That is just MHO though! :o
Guest Pondrew Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 An Aussie mate of mine recently told me about a handheld Xbox that was coming soon. He described it as being large enough to house full size dvds (alledgedly you can literally watch you dvds on it!). Sounds ridiculously large doesn't it?! But to have Xbox technology in your hands...
Guest inspectorgadjet Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 Now that does sound interesting....I'm going to have to do some searching to see if I can find any info...
Guest inspectorgadjet Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 This isn't real but looks really nice: http://www.mobilemagazine.com/archives/200...ox_velocit.html And according to MS, they don't have any plans for a handheld device just yet. So I think that the the rumours really are just rumours right now...check this out: http://www.mobilemagazine.com/archives/200...ox_velocit.html
Guest Pondrew Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 Guess he was mistaken then. Interesting concept in that article but somehow doubt it'd look like that!
Guest muff Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 I suppose my answer would be that if you dont see the benefits of a PSP then it's probably not for you as some people have diverged into other devices tho :- http://www.gbax.com/ordergp2x.html
Guest agent.m Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 (edited) well i just shelled out £185 for a nvidia 6800gt as my 6600 was diagnosed this afternoon  so can say goodbye to psp for this month. Thanks for the responses. I gathered if a psp could get its own section on modaco there would have to be something special about it. Like the wlan but am dissapointed about the umd. For me the emulators and homebrew will add extra appeal. but then there is the gp32 etc still undecided :?: Edited September 20, 2005 by agent.m
