Inputing symbols - why the silly beep?

Why does it make the silly ringtone when I press "#" to access the text symbols? Can that be turned off? I can't find any option to do that under sounds.

Also, is there an easier way to input symbols such as ".", ",", "?", etc?

Ah the 'doink' sound. Very irritating indeed. Unfortunately, the 'Replace Sound' utility which works on the Tanager (SP2002) doesn't work on 2003 / 2003SE anymore.

For the symbol insertion, you can use keypad 1 for that. On a text field, pressing key 1 once gives you period (.) , twice for ,
