Is the band hardware or software ?

I'm wondering if Typhoon based phone band is based on the hardware configuration or is it rom configuration ? 850/1800/1900 compare to 900/1800/1900

For example hypothetically you switch your phone rom from europe to us or vice versa, will it enable the other band ?

the network band is a hardware setting, changing the rom on the phone doesnt change the band selection (it just changes the text labels)
