Guest David Van Via Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 Hello everyone, First of all I would just like to say how great a site this some great stuff here for smartphones. Now the problem, The top left soft key on my phone isn't working, this is pretty much made my c500 useless as all I can do without that button is phone people. Does anybody know anythinng I can do that might be able to fix this problem? Any help will be appreciated. Cheers DVV :o
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 You could try a hard reset if possible but chances are your problem is hardware related and will need a new keypad.
Guest usdiver Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I'm going to say a hard resent won't fix it...and you probably will actually need a new switch board. The e200's were bad about having this problem but first time I've heard of it on the c500. Call HTC Europe (the manufacturer) give them your imei number and tell them the problem. If it is the switchboard it will be a warranty issue, in which case they will then determine if the warranty is still valid. They go by the date of manufacture unless you have proof of the date of purchase. Hope this helps
Guest usdiver Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 BTW you want to make sure that the phone hasn't been exposed to water also, but that would probably cause more problems than what you have.

Cheers DVV :o If a hard reset hasn't worked and your phone isn't in warranty I have replacement keypads here or you could attempt a repair yourself. It's most likely the metal disc under the button that's either shorting or lost it's springy-ness. Richard
Guest alayzell3 Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 hi dude im new on this site but i am a long term user of smartphone's and i have a c500 myself. im also a qualified phone engineer for orange. there is a 99.9 percent chance that your phone is water damaged. the only way you can find out is by taking it to an orange dealer and send it away for repair under warranty. if it is water damaged they will not fix it for you as it comes under customer neglect. the only thing you can do is take the phone apart yourself and clean the circuit board and keypad with isopropol alcohol. you can get it from the chemist's cheap. it usually works for me. if you want more info e.mail me at [email protected]. hope Ive been of some help to you dude.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I know of one person who had a lot of buttons not working correctly on his C500 and a hard reset did fix the problem. He is unsure of what caused the problem in the first place.

Plus HTC are *aware* of an issue with keypads - else why would there be an option on the website for stating the damage 'non responsive keypad - especially number 4'... It'd be very hard for water to get into the *keypad* assembly - it'd have to be immeresed and under pressure for some time for water to get behind the sticky plastic layer. The only part of the keypad that could realistically corrode is the connector on the end of the ribbon. They're not like Nokias etc where the keypress contacts are exposed, the contacts are covered in very sticky plastic. I have one with a ripped ribbon I might use for an experiment  Richard
Guest usdiver Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 I would have thought if it was water damaged it would be more than one button. I've seen on the e200's where only one button stopped working... this was in some cases the backspace button, and in two other cases it was the number 4 button. If you book it in for repair at HTC they will sort it... just make sure it's not been exposed to water though or you will pay heavily. :o www.htceurope.com
