Guest azamsaghir Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Can somebody please suggest a compass application? I have a GPS receiver but need an exact direction pointer. Hopefully, something exists out there preferably freeware. Thanks Azam

How would your phone know which way you are pointing? jonc
Guest mitman Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 some route finding software will tell you which direction you are travelling but that only works whilst in motion. I don't know of any app that can show a compass direction whilst stationary.
Guest azamsaghir Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Yes indeed I actually had the idea when I came across the compass feature in TomTom 5 but as you say it will only give you a pointer whilst on the move. Thanks for the replies. Rgds Azam
Guest Marcos_ Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 I have a compass application for my nokia 6230. It works by storing a database of where north should be in relation to the direction of the sun and the current time. (sine all those factors are consistent. So it asks you what hemisphere you are in, then if you are in daylight savings time, and then it tells you to life the phone on a flat surface with the top pointing towards the sun and it draws a cross on the screen with an N pointing to where north should be.

Thanks Azam
Guest jonc Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 (edited) Sounds great Marcos_ Pity something like that has not been produced for Smartphones. Thanks Azam <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hehe, ok, here goes. Presuming you are in the Northern Hemisphere (which I imagine most people reading this will be) and using the correct local time (ie without daylight savings), point the hour hand of your watch directly at the sun (while holding horizontal). Bisect (split into two equal parts) the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock position, and that's (edit) South. jonc Edited September 25, 2005 by jonc
Guest phaedra Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 (edited) hi :o if you are in the northern hemisphere and you point the hour hand of your analog watch at the sun, SOUTH is halfway between it (the hour hand) and the 12. eg at noon the hour hand and 12 coincide and both are pointing south :( Edited September 25, 2005 by phaedra

But he is right, halfway between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock position is south. jonc
