Guest kingbing Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 Can anyone explain to me how all the data connections work? I've got GPRS, MMS, WAP, CSD WAP and so on, and it's all a bit confusing. How does the phone know which connection to make? I mean, presumably it uses GPRS when it needs to connect to the internet, and MMS when sending an MMS, but what causes it to make a WAP connection, and how can you tell if you're in a WAP call? I've just looked at http://wap.mydigiguide.com/ and it looks like a WAP page, but displayed the GPRS symbol in the iconbar, and was initiated by Internet Explorer with an http protocol... Presumably it's not the same as a GPRS connection, and so you get charged for it outside of the GPRS tarriff? Anyone clear this up? Cheers Matt
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 All data transfer is done over a GPRS connection. Including WAP. MMS is lsightly different as it still uses a GPRS connection, but a different delivery system so you can be charged accrodingly. As long as your data settings are all set to Orange GPRS you should be fine.
Guest Eddy Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 Pocket Internet Explorer that comes on the phone will determine which connection to use depending on the URL. If the URL begins wsp:// or http://wap or has .wml at the end, the SPV will know that this is a wap page, and will use the WAP connection shown in the DAta connections under "WAP Network" If you go to Settings >>> Data Connectins, the four boxes determine which connection willl be used. So anything that wants to connect to the interenet (messenger for example) will use the connection showing. If this is set to automatic then the phone will select the first GPRS connection that caonnects to the internet. Unlike some other devices it will not try CSD if GPRS fails.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 Yus sorry, as I said, as long as you tell the SPV to always use GPRS....
Guest Bazz Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 Not sure I agree. I also use wap.digiguide.com. My WAP Connection (in Programs->Settings->Data Connections) is set to Orange WAP. However I have never been charged for WAP access and have had my SPV since the launch week. I presumed the WAP network was available through GPRS?
Guest kingbing Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 Thank guys. This all seems to make sense. I didn't realise that http://wap. was the same as wsp:// I've also got my WAP network connected as Orange WAP, but this is defined as a GPRS connection to a WAP network, so I presume that it connects differently (or at least allows Orange to charge differently) than Internet or MMS GPRS. Interestingly, there's a WAP proxy, which looks like it provides a proxy between an Internet connection and a WAP Network connection, which explains why "Orange GPRS" is listed in the WAP Network choices - because Orange GPRS connects to The Internet, and then the proxy can connect The Internet to the WAP Network. I can set my WAP connection to Orange GPRS, and it all still works, so it seems pretty good. Automatic also works. Does anyone know what CSD stands for?
