Guest mainmandan Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 Hi, I've been using a Nokia 6600 for around 12 months now, and its time to upgrade. I chose it at the time over a C500, because there were more applications and stuff around at the time, e.g. Ngage games etc. I've been fairly happy with the phone but fancy something a bit different. I've already ruled out the nokia 6680, 6630 as they are too similair to what I have. I then looked at the SE P910/900 series etc. but was dissapointed with the camera in them. I then looked at the nokia communicator series, the 9500 had some great features and software available but was an absolute breeze block! It looked like an early mobile phone so I ruled that out. The lack of the camera on the 9300 also put me off that. I've fancied a windows mobile for a while so have started looking into the models and am unsure what to buy. I looked at the C500/550 but they looked a bit similair to what I have at the moment... and I'm not sure about the range of apps etc. available. I then looked at the pocket pc's such as the SPV M2000, and really liked the idea of WiFi connection and the software available. I do still want a phone though! The XDA etc. seem so bulky and I couldn't really imagine sending a text from them. Im not strictly a business user, but the Wifi and internet is extremely appealing, and it would hopefully mean cutting down on using the laptop. Whats everybodys opinion? Is there a model around the corner I should wait for that will better suit my needs? Thanks in advance!
Guest tripp Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 (edited) Wait for a couple of weeks and buy HTC Tornado (c600), with built-in Wi-Fi Edited October 1, 2005 by tripp
Guest martin Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 Have a look at the HTC Universal which is due out as the M5000 very soon :o

I'd sit back and wait for the C600, or take a look at the M500 - if you like the idea of it and the size of it, wait for the Orange variation of the iMate K-JAM.
Guest Tech Posted October 2, 2005 Report Posted October 2, 2005 C500 :o (but they've just been discontinued :() id wait for C600
Guest mainmandan Posted October 2, 2005 Report Posted October 2, 2005 hmm.... I've read a preview of the c600 - located here and while it looks amazing, especially with the screen. There is no WiFi and the new screen resolution will more than likely cause problems for the software already out! Also, as it isn't a pocketpc there isn't as much software available (such as the psx emu etc.) It's a shame because it looks nice and I would certainly like the size of it compared to the monster pocketpcs. The M2000 looks a nice mobile, but is very chunky, the m5000 (HTC Universal) looks really nice, but I think is a bit too big. That leaves the M500 and the iMate K-jam. The M500 looks really nice, much more like a phone with the features a pocketpc can give. But with the shortage of them in the UK and the ridiculous prices on ebay at the moment I think I will wait for the release of the iMate K-JAM (or m3000?) as it has the keyboard and more importantly... WiFi! The keyboard looks a bit daft IMO coming out the side like that, but I guess you cant have it all. Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

Just back to the topic briefly... I've read a thread on here about a M600, which is basically the M500 with WiFi or so I understand? It is the o2 XDA atom or something? Does anyone have any idea when this will be released, and any specs on it? I think I will wait for the release of that. Edited October 2, 2005 by mainmandan

The XDA Atom looks similar but I haven't seen it with a keyboard but notice it has a 2mp camera, the others have a 1.3mp. The original model is the HTC Wizard and has WiFi in this guise but don't know if it will once the Service Providers re-badge it. It also has a slide out keyboard. Some Qtek 9100 pics here I think it is the XDA Mini Pro on O2. Chiz

Guest mainmandan Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Check out a chart I've produced (following Pzee's example) of all the Pocket PC Phones past and present here. Won't help with potential new Smartphones but... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks - I was just looking at that from the other thread! I think I'm going for either a HTC Magician or more likely wait for the HTC Athena with the upgraded spec. Noticed the HTC Wizard is starting to be released, so that is another possibility - the one you picked out Chiz. Thanks again!
Guest TOPGUN1988 Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 if i were to buy a smartphone and had lots of money right now i would choose motorolla MPx 220 definately... just cause i like phones that unfold.. .not having to use keypad locks, monitor doesn't get dirty etc.. very handy esse!
Guest gromit69 Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 I'm almost the same as the original poster - I currently have a 6600, which I like very much, but I'd like a new toy :) However, I'm now on O2 and can't afford to splash out a lot of money on a contract. As you seem to be able to pick up a C500 on ebay for about 50 quid, would it be a suitable upgrade from the 6600? My main uses are messaging, checking email, camera and I'd like MP3 playback. (I still have an Orange PAYG sim, so unlocking it shouldn't be too much of a problem.....)
