I like many have a C550 which i got to replace my C500. I like many have found the QVGA screen very pretty but more of a pain than pleasure when it comes to compatibility (tomtom :-( ).

When this new C600 comes out very shortly with WM5 does that not make the C550 obsolete, as i assume people that are making QVGA programs will go straight for WM5 rather than WM2003:SE, for example will companies like tomtom not be thinking "writing for wm5, better in the long run"?

Now many of you may say yeah but programs will be backwards / forwards compatible etc etc but even some games crash like hell on the 550.

I may be very wrong if so please say so but i feel that orange are about to lay a turd on the heads of the owners of C550's who still have about 9 - 12 months left on their contracts!

That image will stay with me for a while, but Yeah, I agree with you

Until there is much greater support for QVGA Smartphone apps I wouldn't consider one myself. It is coming (I think) but it'll be a while yet, and all the little freeware apps (which, IMO, are often the most useful) will be last

Another reason why I didn't get a C550

Dave,

I am afraid that that is life. :o

I really wanted an M500 but, stock issues aside, I am going to wait for 2 months ish as the HTC Wizard will make that an older phone (not obsolete though)......

I don't know the answer for sure but the are are quite a few smartphone applications/games now that are considered WM5 compatible and they work fine on the C550.

I am still very happy with my C550 but then again I also appreciate that technology has to move on :o

Maybe I'll just wait for the C700 :(

I must admit, I'm feeling a little 'duped' myself. None of my purchased software runs 'properly' on the 550, ie full screen and with stability.

If I were a code-writer, I'd be number crunching with a view to the 600 and it's inevitable successors which will, no doubt, be released in rapid succession. I cannot see much likelihood of 'upgrades' for my 550 being released because they too will be obsolete once the 600 hits the shelves.

I'm particularly miffed because I had to take an 18 month contract to be able to afford the 550 in the first place. Only 15 months to go then :o

I know that technology has to move on but if you look at say computer games industry every 3/4 years the change up a level. sega master system / mega drive / saturn / dreamcast etc. (until sony put them out of business).

However i feel like i own a sega 32X. If you don't know what that was do a little google search!

I guess i am trying to say the C550 technology is not going to be the standard year that i expect from a phone!

However I am sure i would change my view if

a) tomtom made a fix

:o all programs were WM2003 compatible until next summer at least.

oh and if you don't know a 32X is an can't be arsed to google it, well lets just say sega laid a big turd on the few loyal buyers after eating a nice curry!!!

Oh well, if you have orange care and and become careless when the c600 comes out i am sure you will get a nice shiney c600.

I am of course not implying that you damage your phone on purpose!

if it's any consolation, there will initially be even more compatability issues under WM5 devices than there are on the C550

not a good upside tho :/

I dont actually own a C550, but in defense of the smaller developers, I suspect many of them would be happy to write for the C550's QVGA screen on WM2003SE as the more devices they can support, the better. Personally, I would be happy to support the C550's screen, but I, like probably a few other of the smaller developer outfits, simply dont have the hardware to develop with (well, not until my contract is up for renewal anyway!).

For that larger players like TomTom, then yes, I suspect it may well be that they decide it's not worh trying to support QVGA on 2003 with WM5 just around the corner. However, you'd think it really shouldnt be a huge problem if they're working on QVGA for WM5, to also support it on WM2003SE. Time will tell I guess....

oh yeah for sure. The first customers to get it the C600 will most likely be unknownly be unpaid test engineers for Microsoft. "unable to connect your call, press green to use your gprs allowence to send a report to microsoft so they can file it away somewhere"

-Ooooh, i'am now a regular!!!

O care will replace like for like i.e. replace a C550 with a C550 even if a C600 is out; they have large stocks and will not give you a better phone unless they happen to have nil replacement stock or you are plain lucky

I was just about to point this out :o

It'll take many, many months before their stocks of 550's run out :( and I was 'promised' a sizable upgrade fee if I wanted to replace the 550 before the end of the 18 months. [-X

I ordered a C550 from Orange on Friday cause I was offered a really good deal on the tariff and I fancied going back to WM after a 9 month break away from it all with my K750i. Have to admit that I am beginning to question the wisdom of this because of the QVGA screen. I know there may be compatibility problems with programs and that but what about homescreens? Big problems there?

Thank God,someone else said they love their C550 :o

I think I am a little bit optimistic about development of "older"programs. I remember when I first bought a pocke pc with VGA screen, everybody said the same thing, no more development for VGA devices as the next OS was aound the corner (we did not ven know that it was going to be called WM 5.0).Granted in the begining, there were lot of issues with VGA screen and WM 2003SE but look at the number of progrms for VGA screen. I attribute this success to # of VGA devices that hit the market after HP launched VGA device. I think sameway, QTEK, T-Mobile SDA II are slowly but surely entering HTC huricane arena. More QVGA devices in the market means slight more pressure on program developers not to abandon the QVGA with 2003 SE Sp customers. I won't be surprised if some one comes out with a program or a patch which allows you to reset the screen resolution. But as some onestated before, more than likely this kind of software will probably come from a small developer just like VGAfix for pocket pc came from practically "unknown" developer.

Thanks
