Guest gein Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 I have been struggling past days finding the right PocketPC. Requirements: Support for GSM and WLAN. I want to run ScummVM on it so the higher performance the better. But as I want to use it as both mobile phone and a pocket pc I want the size to be as small as possible. A question that I have tried to find an answer to: Is Windows Mobile 5 developed in parallell with Mobile 2003 Second Edition or will 2003 eventually disappear for Windows Mobile 5? If it is the case that Windows Mobile 2003 will disappear I would rather buy a Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 5 in it. At the moment I'm thinking of either Qtek 9100 or Qtek 2020i. 9100 + : Small, cheap (relatively), looks nice 9100 - : Low performance, 2020i + : Looks OK, high performance (ScummVM will most probably run smoothly) 2020i - : Price, Windows Mobile 2003 SE (I want Mobile 5 if this will be the new OS), larger than 9100 Suggestions, please! I can't decide... Maybe there are other Pocket PC's out there which suits my needs which I haven't already looked at?
Guest Pondrew Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 See the Pocket PC Phone chart I created detailing the different HTC Pocket PC Phones here Windows Mobile 2003 SE will shortly become obsolete as previous Windows operating systems always do when a new one comes along (yes WM5 is a replacement). I'd probably recommend the Qtek 9100 because of Windows Mobile 5 and as it's state of the art. The Qtek 2020i on the other hand has been out over 8months. You're probably right that the Qtek 2020i wins on spec but probably not by as much as at first appears (the Qtek 2020i's 525mhz Intel Xscale processor versus the 9100's 195mhz TI Omap processor).

Interesting.. I was thinking about how to compare those two CPU's. Could you tell me more? I have been trying to find an answer to this question. I will check out your chart.

I haven't seen anything comparing the HTC Wizards TI Omap at 195mhz with the HTC Alpines Intel 525mhz. What I did see was a benchmark of the HTC Wizard against the HTC Magician (Intel 416mhz) and the Wizard was able to outperform it. If I had to guess which had an outright performance advantage I would say the 525mhz Alpine. But there may not be much in it. And I suspect the HTC Wizard battery would last longer...

It did!? What kind of benchmark? Can I find it online somewhere? edit/ I did some google searching and find some benchmarks and, it seems like the Wizard is doing really good results. Just comparing clock frequence is not always the right thing to do. Edited October 5, 2005 by gein

If you went on clock speed my AMD Athlon XP 2500+ would be a poor performer at just 1.8ghz but in reality it licks Intels upto 2.5ghz... Apparently the same rule of not judging a processor by it's clock speed applies to Windows Mobile too in the Texas Intruments versus Intel competition.
