I am about to finally get one of these and get rid of my current PPC and Phone.

I have some questions though as I know very little about smartphones..

Will the Audiovox SMT5600 play Quake, Wolf and Doom? Does the Smartphone version of Quake let you load custom maps?

Is there a way to view JPG images off the SD card on the phone?

How does IE work on a smartphone? Is it the same type of browser as on PPC? Can I accsess the net from anywhere and navigate pages and enter text?

How do you install programs/games? Is it the same way as on PPC..through active sync? Or do you do it from the phone itself using a CAB file?

Thanks. Just want to know before I go ahead with this.

It will play Quake (slowly and the controls are a bit tricky - I'm not sure about custom maps). Wolf and Doom are fine, along with Duke Nukem.

It uses a MiniSD. You can view images on the phone with various applications as well as playing movies with Windows Media Player or the far better TCPMP (previously known as BetaPlayer), which will play DivX amongst others.

You can access the net from anywhere but you will be using GPRS unless you are connected via ActiveSync. This may cost you, and isn't the fastest way to browse. It is an ok basic browser and yes, supports completing forms etc. You may also purchase Opera for Mobile, if you prefer that.

You may install via CAB or ActiveSync installer, depending on what the developer provides (usually ActiveSync installer).

If you get the chance, have a play before you buy. The SMT5600 (aka HTC Typhoon) hardware is no longer cutting edge as far as smartphones go, but it is still pretty good and the higher resolution phones don't have the same level of software support yet.

Oh, and if you are coming from PPC and use something like Pocket Informant, I strongly recommend getting Papyrus.

I presume from your username that you're from new york.

The only carriers that the smt5600 will work on are cingular and tmobile.

I got the 5600 (using tmobile) in the beginning of the summer and I've been really happy. The internet acess is a bit slow but it met my expectations. I did kick myself a bit when i read this: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000760055970/

The tornado is the next generation of the smt 5600. The main difference is that it has built in 802.11 and a higher res screen. If you can hold off a month i'd get that phone especially if you're looking to get a contract with tmobile since that will probably lob 100 dollars off or so.

Id love to wait for that. But alas Im in Westchester county NY. Not the city and TMobile sucks here.

Verizon is the best but since they have the worst phones Im praying that this audiovox with Cingular will get a good signal.

I've had it for a while now and the only problem is sometimes very slow/laggy, find myself always closing things in the task manager. Also there is dust in the screen, and a pressure line through the screen. Need to take it apart, other then that its a great phone. Internet is kind of sluggish most of the time, but it works well. I use it all the time. Great little phone, teenage girls love it. :-P
