Guest Samsonite Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 every now and then, i free up the memory that browsing soaks up. In the Windows/profiles/guest/temporaryinternetfiles/content.IE5 directory there is always a file called index.dat. I have always been able to delete it as it seems to grow with each surf session but now i cant! Trying to delete thru file explorer gives a Sharing violation and source or destination file may be in use. trying to delete thru Activesync gives the same error on the PC. The icon for the file is a BetaPlayer one but that app is not running and i have soft reset till i'm blue in the face and still i cant rid of it!! the file is currently swallowing nearly 2meg of precious memory and i really dont want to do a hard reset.... any ideas anyone?
Guest Confused Stu Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 OK, stupid question to cover the bases first - have you tried going into the phone's Internet Explorer, then selecting Tools, Options, Memory tab, and clearing the history and/or files? Do either of these get rid of this file as I do this religiously and my phone doesn't even list the file you mention.
Guest Samsonite Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 i hadnt tried that....... but it hasnt worked... thanks anyway tho!! i used to clear internet history that way but forgot to try it to solve this problem... anything else to try? i really dont want to hard reset!
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 I only ever delete the folders underneath Windows/profiles/guest/temporaryinternetfiles/content.IE5 What you could try is pointing the IE cache etc to the SD card, there's a thread on that here somewhere, and (probably after a Soft Reset) that should free the Index.dat. The only trouble with keeping the reg changed like that is that PIE doesn't like it when you replace your SD memory card with a WiFi card!

Similarly, me and regedit in any form is not a clever thing. I am very much like the old Harry Enfield gag - 'Know your limits'!!! i'm not a laydee but the sentiment is the same!! I'll have a search when i get home for the thread you mention to see how much damage i am looking at making but i would probably be safer with a hard reset and rebuild!!!
Guest Samsonite Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 found your thread chucky...it was a fairly recent one where you had an 11mb of surf junk stacked up right? the reg hacking is all a bit beyond me to be honest!! unless anyone else has a revelation for me, its a hard reset.....
