Win Mobile 2003 - troubleshooting data connection

I just got the SMT5600 and am not too familiar with the OS yet. I have a dial-up service that is supposed to be compatible with smartphones (Optimum Traveler). I set it up but when I try to connect to the Internet using either IE or the messaging app, I see an error that says "Error: unable to place call". Is there any way to get more detail about the error so that I can try to figure out what is going wrong?
