Guest bluesmudge Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 (edited) Having recently moved into a flat which is most probably bomb proof which blocks all signal for my C500 (on orange) I decided i couldn't survive leaning out the window to get singal so i purchased this http://www.freedom-mobiles.co.uk/orange-sp...ccessories.html I needed the cable and the Antenna itself, but its £20 well spent and it arrived next day! I now have full signal all the time! and no i don't work for / know anyone from / benifit from this company I just thought someone out there might be having a smiliar problem and might need some guidance. But if someone could explain why when outside i have full signal but in my flat i don't? Orange suggested perhaps a led lineing in the building BUT!!! Every other network in the Uk works fine in my flat . . . WITH FULL SIGNAL! Its definatly a mistery But with my plans to buy a C600 when its released, does anyone know if the ariel socket on the 600 are the same as the 500? Edited October 17, 2005 by bluesmudge
Guest martin Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 The signal bars are not the best indicator for measuring signal strength. You would be better using celltrack to compare the signal from different networks.

Personally i don't case if my signal indicator is lying to me, i now have signal and a phone that works seemlessly. - thanks all the same
Guest mcwarre Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 Lead lining? Hahaha. That would make it rather expensive. Is the outside of the flat rendered? If it is they generally use wire mesh to act as a base for the plaster - this would seriously affect phone signal strength. Elsewise just one of those things I have used that aerial for a while - it keeps signal strength constant. The only drawback is loss of ability to mover around - cured by bluetooth headset
Guest XNUK Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 hehe! I live in the city centre and can see the cell site from my window about 100 yards away:) Im lucky enough to get 5 or 4 bars all the time. Its a refreshing change as I used to live in the middle of no where and the only place I could get signal was on the right hand side of the window in the front room!! Hardly a "mobile" phone lol

Guest pete1909 Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 I have exactly the same problem. The house is rendered which could explain it. I might give the aertial a try. Thanks.
Guest Samsonite Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 one other possiblity for no signal is that the base station for Orange is on top of your building!! An antenna array will have a radiation pattern that doesnt usually cover the area directly underneath - it does depend on the antenna type but you do get dead spots when stood right by a station!! i would have thought a busy area would be served by more than one station but its just a thought...
Guest bluesmudge Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Interesting theory - but no im afraid the lovely orange lady gave me a list of local masts etc and its not far - but not on top Physics friend of mine thinks its all to do with wave theory etc etc just happens im stuck in a weak spot. still - im happy now with my 3 metre limit from the window :o

Guest Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 (edited) This could be the answer to my prayers. I've just emailed them to see if the antenna would work with a 6310i, as since my work phone was changed to Voda, I don't get any signal at all in the office. Thanks for the tip. Pete. Update: Just ordered it along with an adaptor for the 6310i - seems you can get adaptors for many phones to work with it. Hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow. If it works as well as it sounds, I agree, it'll be £20 well spent. Edited October 12, 2005 by Guest
Guest jporch316 Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 dont think render is the problem - majority of houses here in rainy Valleys are old brick and mortar terrace houses that heave been rendered over - perfect signals everywhere with orange Still cant get channel 5 though...............
Guest TigerNet Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 @bluesmudge ...by the way, could you edit the title of this thread...each time I see it I think of flashing lights!!! LED ;-) Cheers Nick

On a new build, particularly for flats they wrap the blocks in wire before applying render. It's even worse with precast concrete structures which would have re-inforcing rods inside and then a wire wrap.
