Guest gzrecoil Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 (edited) So I just finished upgrading to WM2005. Then, I decided to use the modem drivers. Got everything hooked up, and tested using google.com Page loaded pretty slow, but it worked through the cell network nonetheless. I have the unlimited data plan for my phone, will it charge me extra when I connect my phone to my laptop and use my laptop to browse instead of my phone? I believe I pay 25 bucks a month, but it is not for the laptop connect data plan, it's for the cell. Please respond if you know the answer to this. Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 If you have unlimited data plan and are using the GPRS connection then there will not be any additional cost. If you are using the phone as a normal modem ie dial-up then you will be charged.
Guest gzrecoil Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 so when I use a dial up connection to connect to my phone thats using gprs it DOES cost me extra? I mean I dial *99# or something like that and it connects to my phone. Then the phone loads everything. That does cost extra. Damn, how do they know? I wish it was the same 25 dollars :/ . Not worth it to pay 80! dollars for gprs.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 Dial up is different to GPRS GPRS is your data and what you are getting for $25 Dial up is using your phone to dial an IP provider as in a landline number so it's acting as a modem only.
Guest gzrecoil Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 (edited) Thank you for your quick response. I will tell you exactly what I did. I used USB Modem Drivers. actually, here check out the tutorial i followed. http://www.golod.com/2005/06/using-the-aud...-via-usb-cable/ Basicly thats what I did. Yes the data is going through GPRS, but does it know its through my laptop instead of the phone? Sorry about the confusion, to setup the usb modem, your phone emulates a dial up connection with your phones gprs. Because you change the initialization string, IDK its weird. Sorry to confuse myself and you. Edited October 11, 2005 by gzrecoil
Guest Samsonite Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 it sounds like you have told the PC to look for a modem via a USB connection and that device is your cellphone. Your phone connects to the internet via GPRS. This should mean that your data bundle for 25 bucks a month is being used. the *99# command is the 'phone number' your cellphone recognises as the command to connect via gprs. When it 'calls' #99* it is not a conventional circuit switched call (like a voice call) and therefore wouldnt be charged per minute.
