What key mapping allows two buttons to be pressed?

I am trying to set up my Audiovox 5600 with some emulators. It seems like I can't push a direction and an action button at the same time. I have seen some discussion that only certain number combinations work. Can someone please let me know what combinations work on this phone? Thanks in advance...

I think it is only the softkeys nad the * button that work with the joystick at the same time. But the * is enough for playing sonic ;)
