SPV final nail in the coffin

Hiya guys, I've been reading through the forum for a few days now to check and see if my problem hasn't come up before, I'm pretty confident that I've not found an answer so here goes!

Model: ORANGE SPV 1st series (they are just called SPV right?)

firmware Canary MV v1.10

Story:

After doing a favour for a friend, he gave me his SPV as a reward, because he was upgrading to the next one up. It worked fine for a while, then one day I turned my SPV off before I went for an opticians appointment. When I turned it back on, I got a screen with a sunset and the orange logo... nothing more, nothing less.

Current status:

The only way to turn off the phone, is to take the battery out. The only way to get past the sunset screen, is to boot holding the memo button. This brings me to a "Canary MV v1.10" screen with three bands of colours. If it's in the cradle an option for USB appears, if not SERIAL appears.

No buttons on the handset will make the phone change from this screen, it appears to be stuck here forever.

attempted fix:

So I called orange (this happened well over a year ago) and asked them what I could do, they said that they don't support the SPV any more and I'd have to send it to a special department to the tune of £30. The department was contactable by leaving a voice message only, then they sent me prepaid envelope to send the phone off. I didn't much fancy sending my phone to an industrial estate in the middle of nowhere, to some fly by night company, so I just kept ahold of it and reverted back to my shitty sony Eriksson.

I also tried to send an network unblocker to the phone, this went across fine. The phone is still in a coma though.

current status:

I've listed the phone on eBay but to no success. I really want the sucker to work again because it was a great phone while it lasted, but I got the preverbal "blue screen of death" from microsoft, never to let me use the lovely device again.

As I mention, this happened well over a year ago. I've been living in another country in the meantime (Japan).

Any help would be fantastic!

Have you tried running a firmware update? If you can get to the canary screen you should be able to flash the phone. The most recent firmware is available on orange's website.

EDIT: You'll need an original cradle and external PSU to be able to flash the phone - it won't flash just using a USB sync'n'charge cable.

2nd EDIT: Re-reading your post I see you have a cradle. Marvellous. Firmware is hidden in the orange help and support section under 'your phone's features\download software' here.

The colour banded screen is how you get in to do a Hard Reset, so you could try that. It should wipe the phone and set it back to the factory settings.

I can't remember the button combinations you need to Hard Reset that model, but have a search - they'll be here somewhere.

If that doesn't fix it I'd think it's dead

Can I just state the obvious for a second...

dadako has had this problem for a year (no fault on his part), but within an hour of posting a question here has had 3 replies that should help him get his phone working again at no cost!

Just how good is Modaco?

Can I also recommend Modaco Plus to dadako - help support the site that supports you, and gets loads of freebies and a lovely warm feeling inside.
