Guest nickcornaglia Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 I noticed that many here use the term JAP to refer to something/someone Japanese. Here is the US, that would be a bit politically incorrect and seen almost as a racial slur. Probably because many called Japaneese, JAPS during the war and it became somewhat of a dirty word. It's like calling them NIPS which was a term used during the war as well. (I have no idea what that term derived from, but I guess I could look it up). EDIT: Nip: A Japanese person (derogatory, from Nippon, the Japanese word for Japan) Also, some still use Orientals to refer to people from "the orient". That is another term that isn't always looked well upon, usually with the remark....rugs and vases are oriental...not people. (I personally dont get this one...cant people be from the orient as well?) But that doesnt seem the same all over the world and I was wondering what other racial or even non-racial terms people hear that are still used and accepted in some areas but are considered a bit insensitive or inappropriate in other parts of the world.
Guest James Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 well i have just learnt you cant use 'Slave' and 'Master' any more when refering to computer systems...
Guest Disco Stu Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 I'm sorry to close what should only be a discussion of language but I don't see how this is going to continue without causing offence to other members. Topic closed.
