WM5 on WM2003 device (persistent memory)

Hey All,

bennish mentioned something on another thread about Windows Mobile 5 and persistent memory. This was new to me, so google threw up this. Very interesting. This is how I sort of do mine anyway, most apps where I have a choice go into /storage. The main memory is backed up on my phone, and I see no sense in backing up things that don't change when you have non-volatile memory available.

Can anyone who has upgraded their phone tell me if this still works on old devices? I'm thinking this may have some kind of hardware requirement behind it. I'm interested as I'll probably upgrade pretty soon myself if that's the case!

I have a Blue Angel myself, which has ample /storage memory for this, if the OS uses it that is!

Not sure I quite understand your question. U seem to understand that in Windows Mobile 5 all programs/data will be stored in rom rather then ram. This is why all the new Windows Mobile devices have much larger flash rom then previously.

With regards your Blue Angel, yes it is capable of running Windows Mobile 5. There is no official update for it, and I wouldn't touch an unofficial (read leaked beta) version with a barge pole, but it is capable (after all, this device has 96meg of flash rom). From what I understand the minimum amount of flash rom needed for running Windows Mobile 5 is 64meg rom. The memory arrangement in Windows Mobile 5 is more similar to your desktop whereby the RAM is used exclusively for running program...

You talk about storing programs in Storage on your Windows Mobile 2003 SE Blue Angel as if this is the same as how the persistant storage in WM5 stores on Flash Rom but it isn't. The Persistant Storage feature in Windows Mobile 5 doesn't require the battery or backup battery as the memory arrangement in WM2003SE does. I believe this is as the data is never permanantly written into flash rom in WM2003SE, instead ram and rom constantly work together to maintain all docs/apps that are installed. This is why it always requires the battery (or backup battery) and why hard resets result when power ceases. It's also the reason WM5 no longer offers the Memory slider in Settings that allowed WM2003SE users to tailor specify how storage and program memory should be split. This is now preset according to the hardware.

When u ask about backing up onto the phone, I'm assuming you mean using the 'Permanent Save' feature in WM2003SE? All well and good but of course it doesn't safeguard your programs at all should your batteries fail. I doubt this is even in WM5 as it wouldn't be needed.

Not sure I'm making any sense at all but hope this helps and if I've totally missed the question I apologise in advance! ;)

hehe. ;) Hadn't even read your google link before posting above. Having just had a quick look I'm pleased to see they explained it in much the same way (ie ram and rom work together in WM2003SE so requiring constant power supply unlike in WM5 where everything is written to rom).

Nah, I never use that useless utility. Got a commercial backup util that takes a dump of the volatile storage. I use /Storage for apps just to keep the main memory free, and it's not backed up either. Essentially, everything on my phone is in /storage in one way or another, either as a backup, or an app install. In theory I should be able to completely recover from a hard-reset on the road, as the backup is restore self-installing.

It's a bit of a hack, and WM5 sounds like they've got it solved the proper way. Thanks for clarifying. Is WM5 not officially out yet? Worth holding off for an offical release I reckon, beta OS's are messy!

No official update for any of the Blue Angel's yet, if there was I'd be running it ;)

The BA roms (though unoficial) is fairly stable, people's experiences of it vary based on whether or not it was installed perfectly and other variables.

There are a lot of developers working on bug fixes to remedy the few problems...

I upgraded a few months ago and haven't looked back. It's the little touches I love, like having little mugshots by the persons name in text messages. I especially like being able to sun both pocket pc and smartphone software on it... I've got my old SP version of Worms World Party running on it!

Hmm, will be checking it out soon I guess! ;) Need to get BT dongle for the PC, I presently sync using WiFi and ActiveSync 4 doesn't allow that anymore (unless you pay for it!).
