Hello from deepest darkest Norfolk, where i'm struggling to stay awake after a manic few days at the Orange Code Camp in Opio, France! This Code Camp was my first, and I have to say, i've been very impressed!

Code Camp is aimed almost exclusively at developers developing for Orange devices (across all operating systems), and is part of the Orange Partner programme (click here for details).

The schedule for the Code Camp was laid out as follows:

- Monday - arrive in Opio in the afternoon, have a welcoming 'pow-wow' before kicking off the event with one session before dinner and drinks in the evening.

- Tuesday - a fully packed day of sessions, followed by dinner and party in the evening.

- Wednesday - session in the morning, followed by a closing pow-wow and departure.

Sessions cover a huge range of subjects, e.g. Windows Mobile 5, Symbian Signing, Working with Orange, SIP and a whole host of others.

I attended a wide range of different sessions (reports to follow), and found them to be very interesting. In addition, I also met lots of developers who are MoDaCo readers (hi guys), and found the 'networking' at the event to be as good as the sessions!

The 'Code Camp' aspect of the event is that 'hardcore coding at the evening' is encouraged... there are a number of competitions running through the event, including the chance to win a Segway in the 'Code Camp Coding Competition'. Attendees are encouraged to submit an application to be evaluated (ideally written / completed at the event, although this isn't mandatory).

Myself and Will did consider entering the competition, but didn't get round to actually doing anything until Tuesday evening when we had had a few bevvies and really weren't thinking straight! :D

The short version of the story is we spent a couple of hours getting our dev environment set up (grrrr!), coded until 3am with me writing the code, Will providing the concept and coming up with new features, and then submitted the app before collapsing into bed.

The bad news? We didn't win the Segway!

The good news? We did win the 'Most Compelling Use of an Operating System' category (yay!), probably due to the fact we used some great Windows Mobile 5 features in our app!

Finally, at the closing pow-wow it was also announced that the next code camp, in May 2006, will be held at Sarasota in Florida.

See you there?

;)

Congratulations. So what was the program you both came up with to win? May be going blind but can't see it in your post...

Any idea what device you're going to push for? I suppose the SPV M5000 would be the pinnacle Windows Mobile device offered by Orange (but you've already had one of those!)

We wrote 'MoDaCo Incident Manager' a program that managed employee in-out status' using SMS intercept, and provided the ability to issue evacuation notices via SMS in an emergency as well as a host of other functions ;)

I'm actually tempted to get a S60 device like the N70, just to have a play and scope out the competition :D

The MoDaCo Incident Manager sounds like something my company could really use, would beat having to sign the signing in book! Unfortunately my company isn't THAT upto date though ;)

Sounds great!

Not been to any Orange events, but they sound similar to IBM, they like to encourage you to drink then get you to do stuff. Just the IBM thing the task wasn't optional :-)

Slightly off topic but is anyone going to the Visual Studio 2005/SQL server 2005/Biztalk launch event in Brum November 8th?
