Are you having issues with ActiveSync 4 and your Windows Mobile 5 device? If so... perhaps the following might me of interest to you! ;)

From: Windows Mobile Update

Subject:  ActiveSync 4.0 Issue alert

Microsoft wants to alert you to an issue regarding ActiveSync 4.0 and the immediate steps the company is taking to resolve it and meet customer needs.

Specifically, some users of ActiveSync® 4.0 have reported challenges when using the USB connection of their personal computer to connect to a device with Windows Mobile 5.0. In many cases, these challenges are likely caused by interoperability with desktop firewall applications or applications that manage network traffic. These applications appear to conflict with the TCP traffic between a device and the PC.

An update for ActiveSync is scheduled to be available in late November, but customers may also resolve the issue manually immediately by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile.

This issue only affects people with new devices just coming to market and running Windows Mobile 5.0 software, and only when synchronizing directly to a PC when using a USB connection (wireless synchronization via Bluetooth, infra-red or directly to a server or other services are not affected).  In Europe, these devices include the iMate JasJar, iMate KJam, iMate SP5, T-Mobile MDA IV, T-Mobile MDA Vario, O2 XDA Exec (Universal), Orange SPVM5000, Orange Wizard, Orange C600, the Dell Axim X51v, HP iPAQ rx1955 Pocket PC, HP iPAQ hx2495 Pocket PC, and the HP hx2795 Pocket PC.

Microsoft is committed to solving this issue for its customers and its partners.

Note that this issue ONLY affects Windows Mobile 5 users, and particularly those running 3rd party firewalls!

I had the VPN issue, wish I'd had the guide, would have saved me a few minutes of grief ;)

Well worth a visit

Incidentally, this issue will likely also affect the leaked ActiveSync 4.1 build.

No mention of why you cant sync categories with AS4 and WM5.

Are MS even aware of the fact?

Literally that.

AS4 and WM5: It is no no longer possible to sync categories. The option is not there.

AS4 & 2003 is fine, but not WM5.

Consequently, my WM5 phone and PDA are now full on hundreds of contacts I don't want.

Why don't you organize your contacts in folders instead? This is possible in outlook, and also makes rules/filtering easier than with the use of categories.

Leviking. That does not make any difference with the phone.

Paul. Any news?

For the life of me I can't get AS4 to sync one device (Qtek 9100) to two PCs. Everytime I switch PCs it insists on creating a new partnership, even though I can see the old (correct) one listed. Then it complains it already has the maximum two PC profiles, so I have to delete the original before I can proceed. It then commences to load _everything_ from scratch. This is a real pain in the ass, as it can take nearly an hour to do a full sync. Worse still, it creates tons of duplicates on the handheld. Go back to the other PC, and I have to do the whole pain again, but this time it takes an hour and a half becuase of all the duplicates it added last time. Is this just something I'm doing wrong, or is anyone else having the same trouble?

Everything worked fine under AS3.8/WM2003SE. I beginning to have faith in Micosoft products again but this, combined with their above "discovery" that using the Windows IP stack might conflict with firewalls and VPNs, just sucks big time :x

I would export your Outlook database to a file (file/import&export).

Then with your phone delete everything from Outlook. You Phone should empty too.

Then restore your Outlook file (file/import&export). Your phone should then re-copy Outlook correctly.

However if your Outlook file still has duplicated items you will still have them when you restore unless you delete them first.

Personally I think AS4 is a step backyards. 3.8 was better and much faster, but sadly it doesn't work with WM5 ;)

Thanks for the suggestions - but that would take me the best part of a day at work. It would be cheaper to buy a new PPC ;) I've found a duplicates removers - but even that takes a few hours to run against my database.

I'm also not sure that would cure the Device ID issue anyway - doesn't AS have to establish the partnership _before_ it thinks about doing anything with Outlook? Mine's not even getting to that stage - plug the device in and up comes the New Partnerhip Wizard.

How about deleting the partnership on your PC and then starting a sync again and it will establish a new partnership?

Sounds like ActiveSync 4 is a piece of rubbish then. I use WiFi to sync, which they have removed in order to charge people for the MS Mobile Server product! Guess I won't be getting a WM2005 device then. Perhaps these guys might be better and not do things like removing the functionality that made you buy into the platfrom in the first place...

Not impressed. Not at all.

AS4.0/4.1..

RUBBISH.

Let me quantify - connects fine via cable or BT... Can see my phone fine, can work with both my laptop and my Desktop PC, and a c500 and my SP5.

BUT...

It's unbelievably slow, even over USB2.0, taking around four minutes on some occasions, just to analyse things and realise that all is up to date - FOUR MINUTES on USB 2.0 to tell me I am already up to date?

Nar like!

Quite aside from the fact that it for no reason at all, and no warning at all, had not sync'ed and would not sync, some of my calendar entries, until I opened, pretended to edit, then re-saved them in Outlook (hundreds of them, this is), and additionally, if I alter Contacts in Outlook, iot will spot this and automatically sync them to phone when connected.

But if I alter contacts on the phone, it doesn't spot this, and I have to do a manual sync to get them sorted.

So, even with NO connection issues like other users, it's still mucho backward step on 3.8 - no doubt about it!

I managed to configure my firewall to "let" my device alone ,but as long as it is on i cannot sync ,if i disable it syncing is no prob. I get the idea that it was easier on C500 .However an improvment is that you can charge the device even if Active Sync is not installed .

My device : SPV C600

Active Sync version : 4.1

OS : Windows XP Proffesional SP2

Firewall : Zone Alarm .
