Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 You know, i'm confused. I've been following with interest the progress of the Samsung i300 Smartphone, an interesting device, albeit one that I understand is going to expose the primarily problem with hard drives in phones - battery life. It's a bizarre conundrum... I purchased a 4GB SD card last week... bigger than the 3GB capacity in the i300... so what I really need is a Smartphone with a regular SD slow. ANYWAY... The reason for my confusion is this. As i've read all of the discussion going around about the i300, i've read over and over again how Samsung / O2 will be shipping the phone with Windows Mobile 2003SE... a real shame, because I personally feel Windows Mobile 5 is significantly better. This was particularly puzzling to me, because I recalled in the depths of my mind that when I viewed the original CEBIT pictures many months ago, I was sure I identified Windows Mobile 5 in the pictures. Sure enough, look at this image: Not the smart graphical design around the soft keys... that's Windows Mobile 5 that is... I know my screenshots. So what's going on O2 / Samsung? I wish I knew... I live in hope we'll all be pleasantly surprised and the device will ship 5'ed... but who know ;) P
Guest holg Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 (edited) this is an photo from the cebit 2005 -i think the i300 there had a wm5.0 rom. but on the newest tests, like on mobile-review everybody is talking about wm2003 - so i think you shouldn't put to much energy in praying for wm5 since the absence of wifi ... samsung thought it might be cheaper to put the old os on the i300. we will see how many wm5-only applications enter the market, to know wheter it's bad or really bad. what about the sagem my s-7 (or medion smartphone)? it has the omap730, like the c500 and a fullsize sd card expansion (but no bluetooth) Edited October 20, 2005 by holg
Guest StarfireCT Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 The telltale signs of WM5 is the task bar to the top and the soft key labels: if they are showing a gradiant color scheme, it's 5.0. I can't speak to the Sammy having 5.0 or not, but given the top and bottom bar in both of these pictures, I'd say the phones are running WM5 bits.
Guest Zone-MR Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 (edited) Wow... this is something I find really surprising... I was at CeBIT this year. I saw the i300 first-hand. At that time I'd never played with WM5 on any device, and everything about WM5 was pretty hush-hush, so naturally I was very curious. Unfortunatly Samsung's demo unit was running a modified version of their own music player software which wouldn't let me exit into the OS. One of the guys confirmed that it ran WM5, and informed me that it was deliberatly locked as Microsoft strictly prohibited them from showing the new OS. I'm pretty sure that given time I would have figured out a way to explore the OS, however having a samsung guy right behind me, and a crowd of other people wanting to see the phone, time was a luxury I didn't have. However, being the cheeky bugger that I am, I 'accidentally' briefly disconnected the battery, forcing the phone to reboot. The boot screen showed the WM5 "Microsoft Windows" screen followed by the generic WM5 "MobileOperator" logo - which confirmed that the unit was indeed running WM5 and that the titlebars weren't just faked by the samsung demo app. After the boot screen, it loaded the samsung media app straight away (I assume it was just added to \windows\startup). That was 6 months ago, and WM5 was still in beta. If Samsung's progress in the last 6 months consisted of downgrading WM5 to WM2003, I'm not impressed. http://zone-mr.net/content/photos/CeBIT/2005/SGHi300_1.JPG http://zone-mr.net/content/photos/CeBIT/2005/SGHi300_2.JPG http://zone-mr.net/content/photos/CeBIT/2005/SGHi300_3.JPG http://zone-mr.net/content/photos/CeBIT/2005/SGHi300_4.JPG http://zone-mr.net/content/photos/CeBIT/2005/SGHi300_5.JPG http://zone-mr.net/content/photos/CeBIT/2005/SGHi300_7.JPG http://zone-mr.net/content/photos/CeBIT/2005/SGHi300_8.JPG Edited October 20, 2005 by Zone-MR
Guest efjay Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Paul one quick question. Which 4GB card did you get and what device are you using it on? Thanks
Guest roma0803 Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 No WM5 since Samsung couldn't get the phone up to it's specs for it to be released this year. They want to release now so it will be WM2003. That's the story that is been told around the Net.

Guest gilesjuk Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Inaccurate article, Windows Smartphone 2003se does do persistent storage. It's the PPC version that never did.
Guest kl1wdr Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 The i300 will be released with WM2k3SE BUT they will release an update to WM5! I talked to my contacts at Orange and they confirmed it. I even got a PDF-document which confirmes it but I am not allowed to upload it.... So what's all the hassle about... :??:
Guest gilesjuk Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 (edited) ,Oct 20 2005, 20:55]i've read over and over again how Samsung / O2 will be shipping the phone with Windows Mobile 2003SE... a real shame, because I personally feel Windows Mobile 5 is significantly better. You know why I think they're going with 2003? It has a wheel, and 2003 has a vertical menu which suits a wheel action. WM5 has a grid which suits a joystick. Sure they can turn off the grid, but that would require some changes to the initial registry. Perhaps they want to test this before releasing it. As you say, this has a puny 3GB drive, I think this product is very long overdue and this is why they're probably cranking it out with 2003SE for now. The only advantage of hard disks is cheapness.
