Bad signal: Repeater required

Does anyone have any experiance with indoor repeaters for mobiles? I get an almost unusable signal in my house and wanted to do something about it, but the only wireless repeater system I have come across is from here: http://cellantenna.co.uk/repeater/cae50.htm

Trouble is £500 is a hell of a lot, especially as they are not dual band.

Are there any cheaper systems around or instructions for home brew versions that anyone has come across?

i just read the info on the link and i gotta say i am a little perplexed...

I thought i knew a bit about radio an' all but i must be missing something. I can understand the the aerial acting as a reciever that then boosts the visibility of the mast output so the phone thinks it is in coverage, but in a call, surely the link from the phone to the mast is not using the equipment and therefore not be a benefit?

we do radio stuff at work and when a repeater is needed to give extra point to point distance, the repeater station is effectively a store and forward system. The system latency is a factor if you use more than one repeater. Wouldn't latency inherent in this system make it no good as a voice orientated device?

...and their lightning protection devices arent worth the thirty quid. With such a wide pass frequency range, there would be enough energy from a peripheral strike to zap the whole lot!! (not your phone tho...it aint connected!!)

i'm not being a smart@rse about this.. i would happily eat humble pie if this is a legit system and someone can explain hot it works... but i cant be doing with trawling their forum ;)

I have no doubt it is legit, the signal will go via the repeater and the direct route will apear to the phone as a weak multipath and be ignored. That's not my worry. It's the cost. Surely some of the umpteen car kit manufacturers out there do something that could be set up similarly?
