Guest J-Foundation Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Hey all. I see there are some seriously knowledgeable people amongst you. Hopefully someone can help. I won an Ebay auction from a company in England for an i-mate SP3 sim free, which I intended to use with my T-Mobile UK sim card. My phone arrived, but the company had run out of stock of the i-mate SP3, so they had sent me a Qtek 8100 Musicphone (same as the T-Mobile SDA II) instead. i was a little disappointed at first, as i don't think the handset looks as good as the older SP3, and i'd have preferred the rocker key instead of the joystick on the newer phone, but i decided to give it a good shot first, and have been pretty happy with it overall. However, the problems started when I topped up my Pay-Go sim... I put money onto the account, sent one text message and made one 39 second call, and when i'd gone back to check my balance it was about £4 down, which most of you will realise is ridiculous. I also noticed that the phone wouldn't send or recieve Picture Messages, and wouldn't connect to any WAP sites. So I called T-Mobile and spent two hours going through their settings and trying to explain to them that the phone was exactly the same as the SDA II, but in the end they couldn't figure it out and suggested i should check the internet for alternative instructions (Qtek site is only in Swedish, no use to me). I called them back a while later and explained the "leaking" of money from my account, and they noted that the phone is constantly making data calls at 12p or 22p per connection, however, I have not been recieving any data. They were understanding that it seems to be a problem with the handset and they had no problem in topping the account up again. The next day I was back on to them because overnight the phone had deducted £8 from my account, and their tech support ran through the settings with me again, doing a hard reset and starting from scratch. After going through this process a few times, we finally got the WAP to connect and display pages, but the MMS was still not playing ball. They got me to send myself a picture message, as is the norm for setting up the service, and tried sending some from their side as well. The "headers" for the messages appear, but the "download" option tries to retieve the message and fails. Also, my own message sits in my outbox and won't send. It seems as though the constant attempts to download these messages is what's causing the credit leaking from my account, although i have since changed the connection settings to try and stop this, and it still seems to be happening. Ok, if you've read this far, thanks ;) My issues are as follows : Has anyone else had anything like this, either with a Qtek / variation, OR with T-Mobile as their service provider? I can't distinguish whether it's the hardware or the provider, or (heaven forbid! surely not!) something that I'm doing wrong myself. Aside from this, the screen of the handset has a duff pixel (always green), so I'm going to send this back, but here's my other issue.... This is all getting done by post to a company miles away, and to save time, effort and money, I'm trying to discover if this is going to happen again if they send me a replacement (in case it actually *is* something to do with T-Mobile), or if I should just ask for a refund and start again somewhere else... ?? They have stopped stocking the i-mate altogether, so I'm assuming that any replacement will be the same model as I have now. I'd actually be really pretty happy with this model IF IT WORKED. please, can anyone help or advise? :?:
Guest martin Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 It's possibly caused by a continuous MMS download attempt which is failing. Check your MMS settings as you should be able to set send/receive to manual. When it's set to manual you will get a text message informing you of an MMS rather than the automatic download attempt. Can you confirm that you are using the MMS data as posted here. http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=200961
Guest J-Foundation Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Firstly, thanks for the swift reply 8) It's possibly caused by a continuous MMS download attempt which is failing. Check your MMS settings as you should be able to set send/receive to manual. When it's set to manual you will get a text message informing you of an MMS rather than the automatic download attempt. Yeah, that is what i thought the problem was. However, even when I had the s/r set to manual to just get the text info about the MMS, the auto download problem was still happening. Can you confirm that you are using the MMS data as posted here. http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=200961 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, those are the settings I had. When the initial settings from the network didn't work, I Googled and came across that very link of yours and tried them (even though they're obviously the same anyway).... Hmmm.... ? It's baffled the T-Mobile techs, and baffled me...
Guest martin Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Have you checked the phones email settings and also the activesync program settings ? These could be causing the automatic connections.
Guest J-Foundation Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Have you checked the phones email settings and also the activesync program settings ? These could be causing the automatic connections. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i had the all the settings entered as per the T-Mobile guidelines in the above thread. i've just tried a Vodafone sim in the handset, entered the Vodafone Pre-Pay settings for MMS, and tried to send a picture message from the Qtek to my T-Mob sim in my old handset (Motorola V300), but i'm now getting the Error "Unable to place call" from the Qtek. i'll keep running through the setings on here and checking them, but it's looking more like it's the handset. but then.... is it possible that a handset can connect to WAP service but not MMS...? this is giving me a headache. one question (not mentioned in the manual) : under Start/Config/GPRS Authentication, the options are CHAP or PAP. would this have anything to do with anything here?
Guest J-Foundation Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 OK, if nobody else has any ideas, I suppose I'll just have to send it back... bah! starting to get attached to the thing, too. :-({|=
