Guest Driekus Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Does anyone know of an application which will allow a text message to be sent to teh C500 which will wipe the device in the event that it is stolen? I sure hope there is no such app!
Guest chigwa Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 I sure hope there is no such app! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why not - these sort of apps are available for the Treo 650 - Orange may well disable your device if stolen but they cant stop anyone getting the info off it. Yes i have heard of power on codes etc but this option would be an extra layer of security for the device.
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 I don't know of an app that will do that for the C500 Newer phones, running WM5, which are connected to Exchnage servers with the Security pack thing will be "wipable", but even that isn't available yet. You could look at encryption. I think FSecure make an inline encryption app for the Smartphone, which would protect the data if not wipe it. There's a nice app for Symbian too - PhoneSecure - which lets you trigger an audible alarm on the phone if it's lost/stolen. It even sends you an SMS from the new "owner" (giving you their mobile number and the phones IMEI number). Sounds simple but effective.
Guest furby Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Yes, this service/app does exist and apparently works quite well. I can't remember where I saw it, give me some time to remember
Guest furby Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Hmm the one I was thinking of was for ppc http://www.scpsoft.com/ ;) must be an equivelant smartphone app though
Guest Wombleuk Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 I was actually a bit worried by the idea of this app when I read the first post, but having gone to the website, I'm converted. This would be a very useful app. Let's hope there is one for the smartphone.
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 That's cool. I've just been converted to PPCPE so it's interesting to me. Something like that combined with something like PhoneSecure would be great
Guest bradmatejo Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 I have been wishing for something like this! My smartphone was stolen a couple months ago, and having to replace the device sucked. But what was worse was knowing that the thieves had access to all my personal info. Contacts, schedule, and worse, pictures of loved ones. Fortunately, there wasn't anything that couldn't be replaced or that was damaging from a financial or business standpoint. Of course I had Cingular blacklist the IMEI, but having a program like this would really set me mind at ease. (I still wonder if there might have been a credit card # or Social Security number somewhere on my phone.)
Guest Br1an_g Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 only helpfull if they keep your sim card in it to send the text too which would wipe the phone. or am i missing something? if phone secure sends you the number of the new sim then it could be useful but not on its own.
Guest chucky.egg Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 PhoneSecure can be set to send the phones IMEI number to a preset mobile number in an SMS whenever the SIM is changed, so you have the IMEI number to give to the network to get the handset disabled and you have the thiefs mobile number to give to the police. Still doesn't get you your phone back, but that's probably never going to happen anyway.

DAMN. I had a scare today where I thought my phone with all my customers info was stolen and the only thing that calmed me down was that I remembered reading about the wipeout feature when I was installing SP2. Luckily the phone is right where it's supposed to be, but now I'm kind of nervous. Edited November 5, 2005 by Socrates
