Guest bretto Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 Hi All It seems to me that there are a lot of development issues to do with different device brands and models when trying to develop applications for PPCs. All to PPC dev doco appears to say if you confirm to the MS PPC standards your applications should work as designed. After all it is really easy to create an app that just uses MS routines that hand off to the system. Once the routine hands off to the system its up to MS and god to do the rest. For instance I have a HTC xda2 and magician that have only been rebranded for imate or o2. There are a couple of extra brand specific apps in the extended rom but apart from that they appear to be made up of whatever came out of the HTC factory. Just about every app I run on these devices is compatable and run as per designed. But take the same application and stick it on an IPAQ or Samsung and issues pop up. Firstly does anyone know if the other device manufacturers are conforming to PPC standards or doing something tricky? Secondly does anyone know if wm2005 will resolve this type of situation? I dont see why it should be as difficult as it is sometimes. There are design specifications for PPC hardware and software (drivers etc) and if everyone is obeying them we shouldnt have a problem. Should we?

I'm surprised you find issues running the apps on an Ipaq. HTC is the OEM. Other brands I can understand implementation being variable, but can you give us examples of issues between an XDA and an Ipaq running PPC 2003? Richard

Richard <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Following the progress of Pocketmax's SreenGuard I notice that it works great for my jam and xda2 but there are still problems with IPAQ and Samsung. Screen handling, how the device uses hardware buttons, etc. I know with PPCProfiles I had to address many issues also. Mainly bluetooth, screen handling and lock ups for no apparent reason. But I think eventually I narrowed down a lot of strange and inconsistent behavour by taking out the routine that flashes the led. But shouldnt it be a simple as "develop using all standard MS functions and all PPCs will work the same"? Unless of course you are doing something tricky like editing a registry setting to make an external app do something. Yes if you create a notepad or something simple it works on everything but you try to use the MS functions to map keys etc and its a whole different ball game. I wonder how the guys who develop games go??
