Guest MitchellO Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 I'm soooooo excited!! My K-JAM arrived by courier this morning at my dads office, so I will have my K-JAM in my hands this afternoon after school!! I can't wait! AnythingOnline was awesome! I cancelled my order with Expansys who were going to take until at least the 10th November, and reordered with them 4 DAYS AGO, and it has arrived. Cheers to them! Will post some good pics of it tonight.
Guest bennish Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 alright! hope you like it dude. I was so impressed with anythingonline. see, expansys? they use good service, and get free adversiting by satisfied customers on the world's most popular smartphone site! *quietly takes bag of money and tries not to look suspicious* ;) only problem is their memory is really expensive. i'm debating now whether to buy a 1g or 512mb minisd from ebay. 110 incl. postage for 1 gig, more like 60 for the 512
Guest MitchellO Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 Yeah, their memory was as expensive as hell. Would never pay those prices. I got my 512Mb A-Data miniSD for AU$63 delivered. I'm happy with that. 1Gb was about AU$110 delivered.
Guest MitchellO Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 I have been using it for the last few hours and I have to say that I am impressed. the keyboard is pretty good, and definitely better than an onscreen one. I am already getting quite proficient with it, and it is definitely one of the devices highlights. I am also very happy with Windows Mobile 2005. The one handed operation of the device is for the most part very good. I can get around many programs with just the buttons and maybe a finger tap. As soon as I turned the device on and completed the initial setup, I did the soft reset to prevent the device from installing anything. I haven't actually installed anything from the ext. rom, as all the necessary things were already installed. The device is running really smooth and I haven't had any problems. after installing some of my apps, I have only used 9mb of space. Well I have to go now, but just wanted to post my initial thoughts on the device. BTW, this post was made from my device using PIE ;)
Guest jonhitch Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 That's great - glad you're enjoying! I too am very impressed with the keyboard.
Guest MitchellO Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 Well so far I have installed: SPB GPRS Monitor PHM Pocket PC Powertoys Total Commander TCPMP AE Uptime PHM Registry Editor PocketRAR All of these apps seem to work fine. A few don't have softkey support, but they work so its fine. I have also done the registry hack to map MSN Messenger to the right softkey on the Today Screen. Just copy this code into a notepad file, save it as "MSN Softkey.reg" (inc quotes to give the file the reg extension) and run it. You need to have PHM Regedit (or similar) installed for it to work (I think): [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113] "Open"="\\windows\\instmsgr.exe" @="MSN" Or, just use the zipped up reg file I made. Looks like this when done: MSN_right_softkey.zip
Guest MitchellO Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 And just a few more pics ;) :D :D
Guest puckster Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 (edited) I have to agree here, i am very impressed with the K-JAM in almost every aspect. I have had mine for nearly 3 weeks (yes i got one off the very 1st shipment into Australia ;) ) and apart from a few early issues that were resolved by a hard reset i'm loving it :D Since the i-mate Smartphone 2 i have been a loyal Smartphone user. Although I had thought about changing to PPC many times i just hadnt seen a device that i liked enough to make the change (until now). The keyboard, wifi, screen size and WM5 were the main features that attracted me and all of this in a small enough size to carry on my belt or in my pocket. (not ever seeing a magician i cant say much about the difference between it and the Wizard but i reckon the thickness is not too bad) Keep em coming HTC, i say i'll be ready foir a new one in 6-9 months. Chris MitchellO: Great to see some other Australian K-JAM owners :D Edited November 1, 2005 by puckster
Guest MitchellO Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 (edited) Look at this!!!!!! As you can imagine, I have been using the device nonstop for over 4 hrs (well, maybe a few stops) and it still has 50% battery remaining from the original charge it had out of the box!! I have not plugged it in to charge except for the 5 minutes that I setup a partnership with activesync. Since then, I have used the WiFi for 2hrs (or just had it on), and BT activesynced 3 times. I'm amazed!!! My magician would be at about 25-20% now! Edited November 1, 2005 by MitchellO
Guest MitchellO Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 (edited) I have also just tried the Skype for PPC v1.2 Beta (available at the link below) and it works pretty well. I only wish it used the PPC Phone speaker instead of the (awesome) stereo speakers on the sides. It seems pretty stable. A little laggy, but not too bad. Works ok in landscape too. http://forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?t=333...409a4ded7b0114e Edited November 1, 2005 by MitchellO
Guest MitchellO Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/754222-1.html I recommend performing this hack. I just did it, and its quite helpful. But one thing that bothered me was after the fact I learned about the double-key method to toggle the Caps Lock and Symbols Lock mode (or whatever you call it when using the Dot key), I didn't remember if I was shifting into it, or locking into that mode, and there was no on-screen indicator to tell me what I'm in... at least until now. Looking inside my \Windows\Startup folder on my Wizard, I found a shortcut to an application called CapNotify.exe. Upon inspecting the file in a hex editor, I found a registry key called "EnableIndicator" which was not found in the registry. After adding the DWORD value of 1 to EnableIndicator at registry location \HKCU\ControlPanel\Keybd, then soft-resetting my device, an indicator appeared next to the keyboard icon on the bottom of the screen! Tapping the Shift key showed a "C" while tapping the Dot key showed a dot! Very cool!Just remember this though, as it took me three tries for the hack to stick. Someone emailed me a very good explanation why some registry entries do not get saved in Windows Mobile 5.0... "For performance reasons, the system registry is loaded into memory and changes are flushed back to persistent storage periodically. This is great for perf[ormance] but it also means is (sic) that if the user soft resets their device or yanks a battery during the period of time between a registry value changing and those changes being flushed, the changes will be lost when the device is turned back on. Tap the device's power button, change a setting in a control panel (including 3rd party control panels) and then hit "OK" (PPC) or "Done" (SP). Install an app through ActiveSync or a CAB on the device. Run an app that resets the device by calling KernelIoCtl or ExitWindowsEx. Any of these things will result in the OS jumping in and flushing the registry." This will make it stick.
Guest bretto Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Hi MitchellO Any chance you could take a shot of your Jam and k-jam together to give me and idea of size, etc Thanks
Guest MitchellO Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 I'd love to, but I sold my XDA Mini (same as JAM) before I got the K-JAM (to finance it actually).
Guest bretto Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 no probs. I see from the specs it is the same size as the jam (mini) but about 4mm thicker. Does it have the same size screen? Also the couple of things I really like about the jam compared to my xda2 is that the hardware buttons are harder to accidently press and require a firmer press. Same for the touchscreen. How does the k-jam fair compared to the jam. Button position, feel, etc...
Guest bennish Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 looks great mitchell. is that the standard miniusb u have plugged into it there? also, on your today screen i see an 'uptime' monitor as well as one that lists your hotmail and gmail... i saw this on the box as well, but haven't seen it on mine! what is it exactly? i'd love to be able to have a little section on today screen that looks like: SMS: 1 Outlook Email: 2 Hotmail: 0 MMS: 0 that sorta thing. now all we need to do is get a screencap program that works with wm5, and post some custom screenschots ;) btw, i did a hard reset and installed no ext rom stuff at all, it's great. (never liked their dialler). Also i'm having terrible trouble with sunnysoft backup. It just freezes my computer.
Guest bretto Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 now all we need to do is get a screencap program that works with wm5, and post some custom screenschots ;) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Doesnt the MS developer powertoys work?

I have a ADVERTISING SPAM one on the way. I think it is the same size, looks the same, but HEAPS brighter. I am going to buy a Mini/JAM screen protector for it. The buttons are nice and firm. I haven't accidently pushed them yet. As for feel, it feels great. I loved the metal case on the Magician, and I don't really miss it because my K-JAM is very nice. Buttons are firm. Keyboard is nice ;)

Its really good for telling you how long your device is lasting on a charge, and how much you have left. The Messages indicator on the today screen is the default one. You have to connect to MSN Messenger to get the hotmail to show up there. It works really well, and checks your hotmail email when you are on MSN Messenger.
Guest MitchellO Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 is that the standard miniusb u have plugged into it there? Yes. It is the one that came with my card reader. Didn't need to open the one in the box because I have a stack of them already. Going to try and make a cradle of some sort ;)
Guest bennish Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Doesnt the MS developer powertoys work? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> nope. 'The OS or CPU of this device is unknown to this application'.
Guest bretto Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 nope. 'The OS or CPU of this device is unknown to this application'. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Is this error from activesync remote display?
Guest MitchellO Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 I may be able to get some screenshots, but there are so many WM5 ones already. My device doesn't have ANY of the extended ROM addons, so it looks like a blank device. Loaded most of my apps now, including Skype 1.2 Beta, and still going strong!
