Mac Syncing - why do I have to pay?

Why is it I have to pay to do things on a mac that I can do free with the software that came bundled with my PC? Is this Apple being stubborn, or Microsoft? Is there any way around it? All I want to do is sync my calendar and contacts, which OS X would very happily do with my old phone. What's the difference? (Other than the fact that was a Motorola and my new phone is a shiny SPV)

Is there no version of ActiveSync for MACs?

I would guess that it's MS being funny and not releasing MAC software, and Apple not being bothered either way if their customers can/cant sync with a "poxy" MS phone.

That's the price you pay if you will insist on having a stable OS! ;)
