Cold Boot Configuration

It has happened 3 times in the last 2 days.

Once with my C550 and now twice with my C500.

I am pretty certain it is not due to software corruption and am absolutely certain it has nothing to do with overloaded phone memory nor low battery.

It happens when I reboot the phone after transferring music files onto the storage card.

When replacing the card and battery I usually check the contacts are clean and give them a little blow for luck.

I try to be careful but am not the most dextrous of fellas...

What am I missing here ? What am I doing wrong ?

going to pub now to drown sorrows for a bit.... ;)

To begin with when I first reboot after transferring the files it takes an age and instead of loading the homescreen it says 'starting Cold Boot Configuration' and goes through what looks like a hard reset. You have to reboot when it's done.

Custom skin and ringtones have gone and though most else seems to be still working I always hard reset because I'm sure something will be corrupted and I want a clean device to work with again.

So I hard reset and Cold Boot Configuration is part of the normal, automatic process - does it not ask you to press 0 to enter CBC ?

Short answer - part of the hard reset process. ;)

How long are you leaving the battery out of the phone?

It could be because, after a while the phone takes it as an oppertunity to har reset. My iPaqs do. i no its no the same a phone but when the backup battery gets to a certain level it assumes you are attempting this procedure an goes through this process.

It sort of a feeble version of a hard reset only wipon the files you have mentioned! Try puttin the battery back in while you transfer your files. It should stop the backup battery from goin down.

Hope this Helps

You know, I think you might be right.

The last few times I've taken the battery out, it has stayed out for at least half-an-hour while I swap music between different cards and generally fanny about.

Thanks for the tip ;)

But Smartphones don't HAVE backup batteries and are meant to have persistant storage. I'm assuming the Ipaq you mention must be a pre WM5 Pocket PC where the backup battery is constantly recharged from the main battery and where the device hard resets if the battery is removed for too long...

Still, will be interesting if Stu does find this solves the prob.

The persistant memory thing crossed my mimd too but Nevawlkalone's explanation is the only one that makes any sense. It is almost like the PPC one where you accidentally knock the battery retaining lug and trigger a reset.

As my enthusiasm for the Smartphone platform is at an all-time low right now I won't be trying to replicate the problem but will be loading up a new collection of ripped CDs in the next few days. This time I'll replace the battery (and a spare mini-SD ?) while I'm transferring with the card reader. If the phone reboots without doing 'cold turkey' then that would tend to confirm Nev's suggestion.

Yes or no ?

It would support it but then, as your device wasn't always coldbooting it's hardly conclusive ;)

How much testing do you expect me to do then, eh, before you're happy ?

;) :D :D

The keypad is losing responsiveness (did I make that up ? what is the correct word ?) so I'm inclined to conclude that it is just getting old. Hey, I know how it feels !

:??: What if the transfer of MP3s to the card via the USB reader went wrong; would that leave some kind of corruption on the card that would be picked up by the phone as it reboots and reacquaints itself with the card ?

I've pulled out USB pen drives / card readers when file transfer is clearly complete (?) but Windows tells me it wasn't ready for hardware to be removed. Just wondering here but may have lost the plot  :D
