Why are there 2 versions of WM5?

...not sure I understand this...

There seems to be 2 different versions (probably the wrong word) of WM5. For example, if I try to install AvantGo on my K-Jam, no problem. But if I try to install on my SP5m I get the message 'not intended for this device'. Both are WM5 devices...

...anyone know why this is???

Cheers

They're based on the same core, but the interfaces are different.

Just like Symbian you have the same core but there's Series 60 and UIQ etc.

You could in theory have an app that would run on both, but it would need to contain two interfaces anyway, one which suits the PocketPC style interface (lots of tabs, touch screen) and one which suits the Smartphone interface. In the end you would end up with a bloated application (much like the old transitional days of the Mac when you had 680x0 and PowerPC code in the same binary while both CPUs were supported).

Also, not all PocketPCs are phones and it's not guaranteed that a PocketPC app will handle having the phone ringing well.

Does Windows Mobile for Smartphone and Windows Mobile for Pocket PC Phone sound familiar? ;)
