VB .net is very easy if you want to get straight into windows/windows mobile programming. I recommend "Visual Basic .net In Easy Steps" (about ten pounds) as a book. I had a little previous programming experience with C++ but I found the book to be very easy to get into anyway (lots of pics and things too), and read the whole thing in a couple of days. I then download VB Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition free from the Microsoft Website and had a play - so much easier than C++ to create Windows programs. That'll give you a basic understanding and you can read up on more complex functions and other vb things on msdn.

Give that a try, but if you are serious about smartphone programming, you'll have to purchase the stand or professional edition, as the WM5 sdk doesn't work with the express edition.

Hope that helps.
