WM5 harder to skin?

After hours of trying to hack up a complete set of skin for WM5.0, I find that WM5 is somewhat more difficult to customise compared to WM2003. Some quirks I noticed are that there is a lack of documentation on the colour schemes supported in WM5. Some elements, such as the Contacts screen can no longer be assigned a background image (unless someone shows me how).

I really want to change the way every single screen look, but the customisability options seem pretty limited at this point.
