Guest Morituri Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 (edited) Ok, Just received my M5000 from Orange, I got it free as "compensation" as one of their CS Ops decided that I couldn't have the package I was on and changed it and it took 3 months to put it right, oh, and I spend over £300 a month on calls and have done for the past 3 years but thats another story... anyway, I have been playing with the phone and I would like to know if anyone else has had the problems I have had... 1) The Wi-Fi is very erratic, both on WEP and WPA and that is with the AP not more than 5 foot away from me. 2) Activesync and Outlook 2003 is crap. If you have notes in any of the contacts it will not sync them. Asking Orange CS about it is a waste of time and the MS KB has nothing of relevance. 3) The 3G/GPRS monitor. It says in the manual that there is one on the CD. I have talked to 2nd level 3G support (Wahoo) and got told to download a trial version of a bit of SW while they looked into it. 4) What happened to the Spare battery? 5) Why can't you dial a number from Notes like you can do on a P910? 6) It doesn't support Line 2!!! WTF this is after a number of Orange CS people telling me it does. Thats all for now, other then, it has been nearly 8 hrs and my new SIM is still not registered, and Orange CS are on the most part a waste of air others could be using. Oh and does anyone know what version of Agile messenger works on WM5 Edited November 18, 2005 by Morituri
Guest xspyda Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 You seem to be having about as much luck with the Universal as I did. I actually played with it for around a couple of days before deciding it was not for me. The wifi capability was indeed very erratic and as this was one of my main uses of the phone, this didn't bode at all well. I can't comment on most of your other points as I have purposely left the manual and all included software sealed in the event that I may wish to return the handset - doesn't this show confidence from the outset! Anyway. my main point was that as pointed out elsewhere in this very forum, line 2 is not an option on and Pocket PC based smartphone and is not likely to be in future. This is annoying to say the least as I use Line 2 daily and am going to be lost without it on the Wizard (which is incidentally the phone I have chosen ahead of the Universal.
Guest dazza12 Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 Seems you're just unlucky with your phone. WiFi works fine for me. I visit several clients as part of my job, and there is a wide range of differing WiFi networks, depending on the size of the company. There's a wide range of WEP, WPA-PSK and WPA-Radius encrypted networks that I've used, and I'm yet to have a problem with it. It's certainly a lot better than what I experienced with the M2000, when the only thing that seemed to fix a persistant problem was a hard reset. The problem you are having with contact notes on your phone, are you syncing them with your PC or using an Exchange server? The only reason I ask is because I use the latter and it seems to work properly. I can't really comment on the problem if it's with Activesync itself, as I rarely connect my phone to the PC. Line 2 has never worked for me, I had the E200 before the M2000, so I cancelled it when I learnt it wouldn't work. I understand Orange are one of only a handful of networks that use Line 2, so I doubt it's a priority for M$ or HTC to include support. However, it's an issue with training for Orange, as CS reps still tell customers that it supports Line 2 - what they won't tell you is although it can be used, there's no way to switch to it. I'd be interested to hear your experiences with them regarding the GPRS monitor. I've bought SPB GPRS monitor for now, but if they end up supplying one, I'll get them to refund what it's cost me. The spare battery - I've received a battery from them. The secret is to complain as high as you can. In another post I've listed the Executive Office contact details, they're the department that deal with complaints and may be able to get a new battery for you. If you point out to them that the orange.com website stated it was supplied with a battery, they'll have difficulty arguing it.
Guest dreamweavel Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 (edited) How are you charging the second battery without a cradle?? Mine only came with the mini usb cable - have i missed something? (+ i only got one battery - thought the cable thing was he reason why...) I've had my M5000 for a week. I've had none of the problems mentioned here and have never needed the line 2. The only difficulty I've had is the phone's insistence in switching from umts to gms to umts to gsm etc etc which seems to mess up my ability to makecalls sometimes. Guest RichardK Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 I really think that problems with device are due to perception. I bought this device just for data and are using another handset for voice calls on same number (orange single number service is your friend). I had a m2000 and had some thoughts - superb data device but not great for phone calls. Also bear in mind that the m2000 took six months before a stable rom was available. Just my View so dont burn me! Richard
Guest afhstingray Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 yea....too bad 6 months is like half of my contract lol!! i guess only after i finish my 12 months and upgrade to the latest buggy spv then that there will be a stable rom available!! sigh....

They charge you £30 setup and then £3 a month. Then you have a 2nd sim with the same number which they set as the primary incoming number which you use your old handset. You then share the talkplan of primary device (m5000) . works like a dream and stops you having to use a brick to make calls!

Do you have a link to the service on their page? I have never heard of this before but am damn sure I could make use of it. Can PM me if you prefer... Cheers.
Guest xspyda Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 -- UPDATE -- Ok, I found the info on the site. Business tariffs only right ? :-(
Guest afhstingray Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 that defeats the whole purpose of having a ppcphone.....i dint want to carry around 2 devices. i just use my c500 for those situations (like clubbing) when i dont want to bring the m5000 along
Guest Morituri Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 Apologies for the delay in posting on this thread. Would you believe for nearly 4 days I have been on the phone with orange!!!!!!!!!! So, have finally got the thing working just about the way I want. With respect to the SPB GPRS Monitor, it depends who you talk to, I got them to give me the cost of the S/W, but the official line is it doesn't come with it. End of story. There has been lots of talk on other forums of using the soft reset hack to bypass the EXTrom install and get better performance. The problem for Orange users is that no-one has made a list of what each CAB does on the orange EXTrom, so alot of trial and error to make sure you install only what is needed and I haven't got the time for that. so, the software I have installed to get it the way I want is: GSPocketMagic++ ( http://homepage3.nifty.com/UK-taniyama/tools/GSPMagicPP.html ) SPB GPRS Monitor Resco Explorer 5.30 Pocket Mechanic Voice Command 1.5 Skype TCPMP I also editied the registry so that Voice Speed Dial doesn't load on startup as I use voice command and the BT registry change, and that way save a little memory, got rid of the Orange HomeScreen (natch) and disabled AGC and Error Reporting. Also changed the IE button default homepage. Also applied a cache increase registry change Don't know if it makes that much difference but it hasn't done any harm (yet) Everything else works fine now, WiFi is ok, 3G is great when Orange sort the network out. Would like to apply the 1.04 RadioRom but Orange won't support it. The only things that are still a pain in the arse are ActiveSync related, if your contacts in O/L 2003 have something in the note field then they will not be sync'ed and if your create a note while the device is connected then the note will be called "note" and not the first line of the note. So, if someone out there knows a fix for those problems or knows what the cabs in the ExtRom do then post them ASAP. But all in all a great peice of kit that should negate the need for lugging a laptop around.

Guest Morituri Posted November 26, 2005 Report Posted November 26, 2005 Ok, well here are the "speed up" registry changes: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize=0x1000(4096) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache=0x1(1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize=0x1000(4096) and if they host copyrighted material I have yet to see / find any, what are they supposed to have hosted? But as rules are rules... Welcome to the site Morituri. Check out the forum rules in the top left. The relevant bit is the linking to other forums bit.
