Guest No5 Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 Heck, this is embarrasing: I'm on my third M5000 because of faults on the previous two, and now this one has gone haywire - Orange will think I'm some kind of serial complainer.... Handset has been fine for the three days I've had it. Apart from Pocket Sype and a couple of ringtones, I've not installed anything in it, nor changed any of the defaults. O.k. it has the standard software bugs: can't turn off screen clicks, etc. Opened the phone this morning and then found the Windows misbehaving: 1) Trying to access anything from "Start" menu boots up calender or contacts. Once started, the "close program" button instead opens "menu". 2) Phone will call "last dialled number", but everything else non-functional. 3) etc,.. Tried 7 soft resets, removed battery, removed flash-card (M5000#2 didn't like flash cards..), all to no effect. Screen brightness defaulted to minimum, just to complicate things. Called Orange. As usual, long wait on hold to be told "this as to be raised with our technical people. We have no M5000s here to look at, nor any diagnostic programme." Mysteriously, the M5000 started to work again for no apparent reason, as I was talking to Orange. Now its just slow, and sheds bits of menus and images as it changes programs. This M5000 refuses to connect to the same Wi-Fi that the other two accepted. Funny how all three M5000s seem to had intermittent faults which come and go - I wonder what is triggering this behaviour. I assure you its not "user error"....

I assure you its not "user error".... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I am on my 2nd M5000 - 1st one the screen failed when carrying the device in my pocket (I mean it is a crazy idea to carry a phone in your pocket after all!) My current unit has a fault with the PDA D-PAD in that when in PDA mode UP does not work and when in laptop mode LEFT does not work - only problem is that as everything else is working, and the fact that I do not use the DPAD I am loathe to return it as the next one I get could be worse! Oddly, I have not had any problems with screen clicks etc on either unit? Wonder what year Orange will release the obligatory update (tho I am looking forward to Push email if it ever see's the light of day).
Guest JonStatt Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 The fault descibed sounds very much like a software issue. How do you know it is not related to the Skype program? Does Skype install something that kicks off everytime you restart the unit (i.e some kind of listener)? I would be tempted to try a hard reset of the unit and not installing Skype for a week and see how you get on. Jonathan
Guest No5 Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 Haha.... just realised that Skype isn't in fact installed on this M5000 - after laboriously entering all my contacts for the third time, I didn't get around to doing anything else. Thought the M5000 had cured itself, but no - opened it after letting it sleep through lunch-break, and its back to the Windows crashes. Sorted itself after two soft resets and a battery removal Orange technical haven't called back yet - in fact they haven't called back for the problems on M5000 number 2 yet! mthomas50: how did you manage to turn off the screen clicks? Mine are already un-selected in "notification", but that has no effect. If I actually select screen clicks, i then get a double-click each time.
Guest JonStatt Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 To eliminate a hardware fault, why not do a hard reset assuming you have not customised it much yet? At least then you can say for sure its software. If it is software, then there is probably a specific sequence of events that leads to that problem. I remember Nokia had a beauty of a bug where following a specific sequence, would result in the phone rebooting everytime you hit a number key! Once the phone was in this state, only a hard reset would cure it. It took weeks before it was found to be due to the T9 dictionary. Until then it was a mystery that only swapping the phone was hoped to cure! Jonathan
Guest Jasonkruys Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 do you have a memory card in the device? might be worth taking that out if it is the same one used in all phones. my c500 did similar things and turned out to be a general incompatility with the card. Posted from my M5000!
Guest mthomas50 Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 mthomas50: how did you manage to turn off the screen clicks? Mine are already un-selected in "notification", but that has no effect. If I actually select screen clicks, i then get a double-click each time. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I disable screen taps as a matter of course (if they are enabled) On the M5000 I also disable Events (warnings, system events). - BTW this does indeed disable screen taps which is good 'cos I find them irritating! I have noticed that I can enable screen taps and I only get 1 audio tap per click. If I enable Events I get the sounds for certain events. Now the combination of having both enabled means that when you click on the Start button (for example) you hear 2 slightly different clicks - is this your problem? I am not sure if this combination affects other system clicks but I can confirm that 'normal' system clicks i.e. when clicking icons or generally tapping on the screen, are not duplicated under this scenario. Hope this is of some use...
