Guest casanova Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 (edited) Hi, all I've had my Vario for a couple of days now and have just tried to sync it for the first time. I installed all the software from the supplied disk, it updated Outlook to 2002 edition, and installed active sync 4.0. When I first connected the device it connected fine and got to the synchronizing screen. But then it just hangs. I updated to active sync 4.1 but I get exactly the same thing. Both the PC and the Vario just say synchronizing, but nothing seems to be happening. How long does it usually take to sync? All I want is my contact to work. I have left it for 15 minutes and it still does nothing, is this normal. Sorry, I'm a noob. Edited November 22, 2005 by casanova
Guest casanova Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 (edited) Update - The active sync program allows me to browse the device, add files and install programs so I am begining to think its the way I setup my outlook account. I have always used outlook express in the past so I may need to read a tutorial. Thanks The problem has now been resolved in a fashion. It was the firewall (zone alarm free edition) that was blocking the syncing. Even though I had ticked all the allow boxes it was still blocking it connecting, although it would let files be transfered between my PC and the vario. I just need to find the correct settings for zone alarm now, then I will be a very happy boy. Edited November 22, 2005 by casanova
Guest Pondrew Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 Glad you got it resolved. Seems Activesync 4.x is having far more problems co-existing with the different firewalls then the previous version did. :?:

I have to admit that I have thought of returning it, but now I am glad I haven't. I just need some more cool programs to install on it now, I have TCPMP and it's great. The only thing that gets on my nerves a bit is the slow responce time of loading programs etc... Hopefuly this will get better when I can overclock it a little. I have all the standard T-Mobile settings so that probably won't help. I don't feel confident playing around with the registry. I hope my experiences will help others when trying to sync there Wizard. PS - how do you install programs to a specific location, ie like the Mini SD card? When I run the exe files they just seem to install themselves where ever.
Guest Pondrew Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 We all have to start somewhere! I was a beginner with a new Smartphone making my first post here just two and a bit years ago. :) Eventually I picked up enough to be able to offer some assistance back... Unfortunately my experience of Activesync install (admittedly only with WM2003SE and earlier devices) suggests it's only possible to specify phone storage or storage card when installing. ie it's not possible to specify a specific folder to install to on your storage card :D
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 If its a PC installer when the Activesync file installer pops up it sould prompt you to install in the default location which you can decline and choose a specific folder. Installing the .cab directly always installs to \Program Files on the storage card or main memory. Thats my experience of WM2003/se and WM5 :)

Just tried with Medieval Heroes II. Used Add/Remove Programs in Activesync. Chose Medieval Heroes II. Unticked 'Install program into the default installation folder' (assume this is what you're talking about) and although it does let you specify between Main Memory/Storage Card/Storage it then just procedes to install to the default directory wherever you've specified. This has been my experience with all software installed through Activesync. Why the difference with your experience? Have wanted to organise my programs better on my SD card for months as have a ton of software each with its own folder in the root directory of the card. Remember posting a Help & Advice thread asking if there was a way to specify installation destination years ago but being told not! Mono, if there's a way PLEASE do tell me. ;) Anyone else get this to work? What am I doing wrong?! See Casanova, nothign with with asking questions :D
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted November 26, 2005 Report Posted November 26, 2005 Hmm strange - i installed about 100 apps when i was doing the PPC awards in the summer - sent them all the the SD card and they all ended up in a Program Files folder. Not sure what i'm doing different? Unless you want to put them into an "apps" folder (or something not called Program Files...?
Guest Pondrew Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 Hmmm. Very strange indeed. Just been looking at my Storage card to check if ANY games installed into a Program Files directory. 'The Computer says no' :) Which to me suggests that there must be some setting or step in the installation that I'm missing causing all games to install into their default directory off the root directory of the storage card. Will have to look into it some more...

Guest cthulhu Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 Casanova, did you ever work out what settings are needed for Activesync to work with ZoneAlarm??? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Got so p*ssed off with this tonight that I just had to experiment. For all those that come after, these are the steps that I went thru to solve it. NOTE: I was only testing Contacts sync here. 1. ..Device is connected and ActiveSync is just siting there saying 'Synchronizing' 2. Maximize ZoneAlarm, go into the programs section... 3. Ensure that both Activesync Application & Activesync RAPI Manager are set to allow internet & trusted connection for both Access & Server. 4. Go into Firewall | Zones and select the entry for Windows Based Mobile Device 5. Right Click and set this to Trusted, mine was set to Internet. 6. Disconnect device. 7. Closedown ZoneAlarm completely 8. Connect device. Contacts will synchronize (but mine took over 2 mins for the count to start moving!?) 9. Disconnect device 10. Restart ZoneAlarm 11. Change a contact in Outlook, just as a test. 12. ReConnect device 13. Syncronizing will start and the contact will go over to the device. 14. Subsequent synchronizing will work without a hitch. 15. Don't ask me why !?! Good Luck!! Cthulhu 8)
Guest nuttyphilt Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 Casanova, did you ever work out what settings are needed for Activesync to work with ZoneAlarm??? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have Zone Alarm, when I first plugged in the Vario, it detected it as a new network so I added it as a 'Trusted Zone'. If I open up Zone Alarm and go to the Firewall/Zones section, I can see my Vario listed as follows: Name: Phil's MDA Vario IP Address/Site: 169.254.2.0/255.255.255.0 Entry Type: Network Zone: Trusted Then the 'Trusted' Zone is set up with Medium level security in the Firewall/Main section.
Guest casanova Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 Casanova, did you ever work out what settings are needed for Activesync to work with ZoneAlarm??? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi cthulhu I only have the free version of zone alarm but I used this link from the microsoft site. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/hel...esync/zone.mspx I could only use steps 1 - 5. After that there was nothing else I could do, but I have now found a very simple solution. I just click on the firewall link and set it to medium from high. It then connects with no problems. It's not ideal, but it works for me. Cas

Another newbie here with a brand new Qtek Wizard and exactly the same problem. I downloaded ActiveSync 4.1 from microsoft, and voila! Problem solved. Thanks to the smart folks here for a) reassurance that I'm not the only one, and :) good advice!
