Charging the Vario for the first time

Hi

2 questions really

1) How should I first charge the MDA Vario when it arrives? Does it need a really long charge to fully prime the battery? Should I then drain it completely and charge it again? After this, is it better to keep it topped-up and occasionally drain it completely - like an iPod?

2) What other tips do you have for when I first get it?

Thanks very much, looking forward to getting one soon

Don't really know if it counts on modern batteries, but the T-Mobile gimp, told me to do a 14 hour charge. I did, but only because I left it charging over night anyway.

There's some GPRS tracking s/w (Spb GPRS Monitor) on the CD. That's worth installing.

Extended_Rom-wise, I've not changed mine and seems to be alright.

Oh, it also came with a free screen protector, which i'm still using. It's not great and doesn't seem quite big enough, but no real complaints with it. Will, eventually buy a better one.

Not sure about the Vario, but my K-Jam took about 2.5 hours for the green light to come one (according to the manual, imate batteries are shipped partially charged).

Phone has been fine ever since (was in 'stand-by' mode for about 12 hours the other day and the battery only dropped by 3%)

i plugged it in straight away and started using it then took it off after an hour and used it for a couple repeted that twice then charged it over night.

i believe that modern batteries dont have memories so it dosent really matter

but there are many conflicting stories.

i do believe you need 3 full cycles fully dechargin it to reach tis max potential and calibrate battery meter same for any device.

A few things:

Initial charges on modern batteries should be at least 8 hours - this is to ensure all cells in the battery are completely activated and charged (even if the phone _thinks_ its fully charged).

Modern Lithium Ion batteries should NOT be allowed to completely discharged - this can damage them! Only older Nickel Cadmium batteries needed this, they haven't been used for years!

Thanks all so far.

So presumably when I first receive it and plug it in to the mains for a long charge, I shouldn't use it at the same time? Just leave it completely alone for the first charge?

(That's if it ever gets delivered... ARGH)

I plugged it in and used it, couldn't resist not doing so...

I don't think it really matters if you use it or not.

Good answer!! This means I can play with it whilst it's charging. The expected delivery for my Vario hasn't changed - "tomorrow"... grrrr

Any more tips for first charge or first thing to do with it?

If you ever decide to install Spb Pocket Plus, be sure to turn off Safe mode... There's a stick at the top of the page on this one, by MitchellO

As Mono said, when's it's hooked up to the mains on charge it will provide more power than you can use so feel free to use it, it'll still give charge to the batteries.
