Wireless G problems with Vario

I have never been able to connect to my Belkin Pre-N router using my Vario - I had to set up a separate Wireless-B only AP to be able to use wireless functionality in my home.

I have since read that the branded Wizards (ie. the Vario and the O2 mini S) are limited to 802.11b while the unbranded iMate and QTek's have full 802.11g support, but no-one seemed able to confirm whether this was due to different hardware, or the ROM image.

I have just reflashed my Vario with the iMate K-JAM WWE 1010903_106_10110_ship ROM and can confirm that this is a T-Mobile ROM limitation - my phone now happily connects to my Belkin router using 802.11g protocol.

Cool, I was hoping someone would try this at some point :)

Hopefully T-Mobile will bring out a ROM in the future that has G support, although flashing to a different ROM altogether is just as good a solution imho.

in other words do you see any drawbacks to doing this?

All seems to be working perfectly - I soft-rebooted after setup, so none of the 'extras' were installed. Seems a little more stable and quicker, but it's all subjective.

@Battletank, you might want to check to ensure all the software you had before is still there as traditionally preventing the extended rom from installing prevents apps like Phone Pad, Album, Camera, and numerous other items from installing. On other devices it has also been proved that preventing installation of the extended rom also prevents bug fixes/patches important to os from being installed. I wouldn't do it myself but...

Obviously installing another providers rom onto your device also means you have to enter the settings yourself if you can't get hold of a cab file with them already in.

On the Wizard, the only thing that really needs installing from the Ext. ROM is the shortcuts cab (activates MMS and makes shortcuts for MIDLet Manager and Voice Dial). That is all I have installed and it runs great!!

Camera and Phone Pad are all stored in ROM (not Ext. ROM) and are already installed without Ext.ROM. There is no Album app on the Wizard.

What about Smartdialler? Folks migrating to the HTC Wizard from Smartphones will definately want that (replicates the ability to search contacts by typing the first letters of their name). Wouldn't be surprised if there is other software/settings/bug fixes which could be missed.
