Guest eyecam Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Hi, I have been fiddling with my Vario and I love it to bits but when you switch it to standby it seems to drop the Wirelss connection, even with the slider set to Performance So if you have set it to check mail every 30minutes when it wakes up it dials TMobile GPRS as the Wireless has yet to kick in, a few seconds later its using GPRS still but Wireless is connected as well, What am I doing wrong ?? My wireless is set to connect to "The Internet" Thanks
Guest Pondrew Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Hi Eyecam, this seems to be common to all WM5 devices from HTC (the manufacturer) with built in wifi and would seem to be by design. Wifi goes to sleep when put in standby and won't reactivate until the device is taken out of standby by the user. The result as you've found is that auto email polling will use gprs instead. Unfortunately I don't think there is presently a solution to this. A rom update in the future may resolve it but that depends on 1) it being fixable in rom as opposed to a hardware problem and 2) if they (HTC and the mobile suppliers) do recognise it as a problem.

I've had a similar bizarre problem with mine and GPRS/ActiveSync that happened again this morning. Sometimes when I sync it with my laptop (which is connected to the internet using WiFi, and running ActiveSync 4.1) using the USB cable, it starts off OK and then during the "looking for changes" phase, activates GPRS on the handset. It appears to be trying to synchronise something (possibly Exchange Server Activesync) using GPRS rather than the pass-through connection. It doesn't actually work though. It wastes 100k or so of my GPRS allowance and then does nothing. At which point I notice the little "g" in the top bar and have to manually cancel. It doesn't do it everytime, only occasionally. I wonder if it's because my laptop (which isn't state of the art) is taking a little while to establish the pass through connection, so the device thinks it's not connected and uses GPRS instead. Most annoying though... So far, I'm impressed with both WM5 and the Wizard, but this new OS combined with ActiveSync 4.x seems to have a number of "issues" compared with WM2003SE and ActiveSync 3.x. Steve.
