Vario Extended_rom files

Hi

Can anyone give a clue as to what these cab files do?

I've installed none, and wifi works fine, as does the phone (!)

I know some look obvious - I read MitchellO's thread (http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=16540), and the TMobile Vario files bear little resemblense.

I presume TMUK is T-mobile UK, but what then is TMOUK and TMO ?

Any help appreciated!

Can you try connecting to Wifi under G? Rather than B. I was wondering whether that final Wifi bit was for setting it to B only... but wasn't prepared to hard reset to go through the extended_rom without it.

I've hard reset my Vario (with Vario ROM) but without running any of the Extended ROM files and my Vario still would not connect to 802.11g.

Conversely I now have a k-jam ROM on my Vario and have run that with none of the k-jam Extended ROM files but all of the Vario files and that will connect to 802.11g.

The screw up of 802.11g by T-Mobile is buried somewhere in the main ROM, not the Extended ROM.

Has anyone actually noticed any major difference with speed on 802.11b or g?

My broadband has just been updated to 10Mb courtesy of ntl, still a meg shy of 802.11b, all public access points run 802.11b. And personally I don't regularly transer 100's of mb of data over my wlan! An even if I did, 802.11b's 11MB/s speed is well over 1MB a second!

Personally I don't see what the big issue is!

The issue for most people, I imagine, is not the connection speed. It is the ability to connect to a "g" network at all. I've run my home network in 802.11g only mode for almost two years. I do not want to have to drop it down to b/g mode and slow the whole network down with "b" devices.

If I go to friends' houses where they have "g" networks I would like to be able to connect there too (with their permision), without begging them to arse about with their network settings.

If I'm out and about and need to pick up some email or do a quick browse I'd like the opportunity to connect to an unsecured "g" network and not be limited to "b" only.

The hardware supports 802.11g connections if not "g" speeds. I think as a customer it is reasonable to expect "g" connetions to work out of the box and not to be disabled on purpose by the supplier, especially as T-Mobile do not publish specs for the Vario so you have no way of telling this before purchase.

True. Personally i use my router in mixed mode, if i need to transfer large chunks of files i'd plug it into my PC (or laptop into a switch) and leave it sitting there, even at g speeds its still tedious to transfer large files. As far as i know, most access points run in mixed mode by default, if someone has failed to lock down their AP without even WEP i doubt they'd have thought to switch it to g mode only! :)

I see your point, and am in no way attempting to flame or troll the original post! I just personally do not see why it is such a major issue when 802.11g is not as standardised as b (in fact up recently g was not even fully standardised iirc, i dont know if thats changed recently, and if it has it means older hardware can still have issues connecting with other manufacturers hardware). Where theres wireless, 90% of the time theres 802.11b.

You haven't taken into account the fact that 11Mbit is the maximum THEORETICAL speed of 802.11b. It rarely ever gets that high. From what I have read normally you will get about 5Mbit of actual throughput.

54Mbit however is obviously much higher, about 5x the maximum speed. It too doesn't hit it max. speed with any regularity. But it would (should) show an improvement on those transfer rates and internet speed. I get a better speed with 3Mbit cable when using a 54Mbit WiFi router as compared to a 11Mbit one. It may say 11Mbit in my taskbar, but it isn't.

Connection speed is purely based on signal strength (ditto with GPRS). As my router is :)

En_croute - I assume most of them are patches, just cos it works doesnt mean its completely up to date!
