Copilot Pocket PC 5 / Mitac Mio 168 issue

Hi,

I'm having a problem with Copilot that is rendering it useless. I cannot tell whether its a software issue or a hardware problem. Basically CoPilot will run and let you enter a destination address. However when you press finish in order for it to plan the route the "egg timer" (animated square timer) comes on and it doesnt progress any further. I have left it for over three hours and still the time is displayed. There is no way out other than to softreset the Mio.

Could anyone suggest some possible causes/solutions/things i could try. The software has run fine for over a year and has only recently started to go wrong.

thanks

Moved to Pocket PC Help & Advice. Hope someone can shed some light on this, never used either the device nor the software. Presumably it's not because it's not receiving a signal from the gps?

Tell 'em you want them to put you through to their refunds dept. That usually gets a bit of movement...

However, it probably won't come to that, if we can help you. Have you tried reinstalling the app? If that doesn't work, repeat the reinstall but this time ensure that all remnants of the previous one are removed. Delete the directory it installed to, and have a look through the registry.

think they'd tell me to jump to be honest. Its well over a year old.

I've completely formatted the SD. Hardreset the pocket pc on numerous occasions and had several reinstalls. I assume a hardreset of the PocketPC would delete everything?

Someone on another forum suggested the SD card may be at fault as i can access the maps but not route plan.

I'm currently copying the SD card to one i know is fine.

Fingers crossed ;-)

And? The whole "years guarantee" is a manufacturers warranty, with the key phrase being "your statatory rights are not affected". Learn those rights! :) Essentially, the guarantee really lasts as long as you'd reasonable expect it to. So when your three-year-old plasma TV dies, kick up a storm and give Trading Standards a call. A phone...well, I'd say at least two years is good for a "top-of-the-line" device like yours. Perhaps a nokia would be a different story. It's all about expectations.

You suggest the hard-reset may not be deleting everything; that may well be the case. For example, my phone has a /Storage area that gets kept over a reset. If the app decided to store stuff there (which there is good reason to sometimes), then your reset won't fix it. I'd defo recommend taking a look in there for any cruft laying around. Delete the lot if you can. I've never heard of this being an issue, but it sounds quite plausible.

If you do a full reset, and it still doesn't work, the only thing to look at next is the hardware. However, your problem is very specific and I'd be highly surprised if it were a hardware fault. I suppose the fact that route-calculation is probably quite CPU intensive may be an issue. E.g. heat kills electronics and CPU cycles == heat. Could be a thermal problem, or something similar that only shows up via stress testing. You could give the phone a blast with some CPU hogging apps (maybe a 3D game?) and see if there are similar issues. However, we've decended into cluching at straws at that point.

thanks for the replies. I havent had time to play tonight. Work taking over :-( I'll certainly have a play and see what does and does not get deleted.

Its been suggested elsewhere that maybe a memory issue but as its worked in the past it must mean something else is a foot.

It'll be interesting if tech support ever get back to me :-s

once again thanks. I'll report back if i get anywhere.
