T9 problems - this really bugs me

There must be a way to fix this but I can't see it posted anywhere. T9 appears to be disabled by detault. When I go to a text field, I have to press and hold the * key and select number 4 to enable it. I then move to the next text field and it is disabled again!! grrrr. How can I keep T9 permanently enabled?

At least you can switch to T9 by pressing * five times.
