Very interesting! That page links to a download of an updated version. I wonder if it's any more featured than the existing one many of us have? Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an "about" page listing the version number, so it's all guess work.

Anyone tried this? Any changes worth having?

That version is very old, and is for 2002/2003 devices, and was the version included in the Orange C500 ROM update.

It coincided with the security updates microsoft made to the service many months ago, that required an update.

Sorry didnt mean to point out the download just thought this may have been an answer to the initial Q...

Microsoft has updated the MSN Messenger Service to ensure that our customers have the latest security and privacy protections. This change requires Windows Mobile-based device users to use updated MSN Messenger software in order to connect to the Service as of October 15, 2003.

Windows Mobile-devices that require the update will show the following error message upon attempted logon to the MSN Messenger Service:

"Logon to the Messenger Service failed because the service is not compatible with this version of the program." Retry | Cancel

Are you by any chance using an e-mail address other than Hotmail? I couldn't connect using my Gmail address for a days either. Then I did a registry hack and I haven't had any problems since.

Translated from my Dutch website here:

1) Go to the following registry entry:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Pocket MSN"

2) In this directory you'll find a key by the name "AutoDomain". This key's value is "@hotmail.com". Delete this key entirely by holding your stylus on it and selecting "Delete" from the pop up menu.

3) Perform a soft reset.

4) Now try and sign up again.

I've gathered quite a few registry tweaks there amongst other tutorials and info. However, I'm not sure if I can be bothered translating all of it. It took me enough time writing all of it and I'd have to translate 55 pages in Word :)

Im assuming your connecting via gprs not wifi as you menioned the c500.

Have you got enough credit? happened to me the other nite! Logged onto msn and forgot to buy oranges GPRS bolt on and it ate my credit and kept telling me that the service was unavailible, untill i realised (after trying to make a call) that i had no credit and that was the reason for the service "glitch"!

it works on C500, but not on my T-Mobile Vario(HTC Wizard)

agile messager works fine on the Vario but Pocket msn wont login :D

am on contact so dont need to put credit on

Fair enough, looked into this with my ppc and had the same problem.....

SOme thing along the lines of "...servive is not available"

After a few sof resets and persistnce with logging in, eventually i got it working,

all i can suggest is to keep trying
