Vario Backlight and hard reset problems

Hi all,

I had a strange backlight problem on my vario over the weekend. It worked fine until it turned itself off after the 30 second timer, or I put it into sleep mode. Then it wouldn't come back on.

First I tried turning it off and on again, this didn't work. So I then soft reseted it, but this didn't work either. So the only option to try seemed to be a hard reset.

I consulted the manual to see how this is done, it said to hold down the messaging key with the voice dial key and then press the soft reset button. I held all three keys for between 5 and 15 seconds (I tried numerous times). After this I let go of the soft reset button but kept hold of the other two buttons for another 10 or so seconds before releasing them also.

All that happened every time though was a screen displaying thick horizontal lines of colours (I don't have a picture sorry), and some version numbers within the top two coloured bands. I thought it must be doing something so I left it for 30 minutes but it was just hanging. I eventually pressed the soft reset button to bring it back to life. When it booted back up I still had the two programs I had installed but my contacts had been wiped. Strangly though the backlight problem seems to have fixed itself.

So what I need to know is how to perform a proper hard reset and how long does it take? Should I have left it longer than 30 minutes? I need to know how because I want to try some of the reg hacks to speed up the device, but if something goes wrong I can always hard reset it.

I had a similar issue which I think was related to SPB GPRS monitor, it seems to dim the backlight to nothing.

If you can get in some good light you should be able navigate to Start > Settings > Backlight and slide the slider with no backlight on.

Sounds like you actually managed to get the bootloader screen up. A hard reset is done by pressing and holding both the soft keys on the hardware keyboard then doing a soft reset.

I find the 'button pressing' hard reset quite tricky to do successfully every time.

Go to Settings/System and use Clear Storage - I think it does the same but is much easier.

get some light and make the way to the backlight setting :D

What is the bootloader? What is its use?

Its used to directly write ROM images to various sections of the devices memory. Back in the old days of the SPV/E100/E200 the devices had to be in this mode to allow us to install other operators ROM images onto the devices.

I had the same problem using the buttons to hard reset

goto start/settings/system/clear storage ande enter code 1234 this will hard reset

Dunno where you get this from :??: - and you an MVP an' all :) Maybe you and the OP should try RTFM again! A hard reset is done using the Comm Manager and Voice Recorder buttons on the side of the case - nothing to do with the messaging button or keyboard. I don't know why people struggle with it so much - it's no harder than CRL-ALT-DEL on your PC. Edited December 16, 2005 by Metoo

What's the old days got to do with it? The bootloader is used just as much today to update ROMs.

SPB have an update on the way that will solve the backlight issue ( although Tmoble hadnt a scooby about what I was talking about ( sigh )... its defo the GPRS software as SPB knew about it....

When the minor update iss available just install over the top from their site - Major updates require a new license.

It's the same method as used on the Universal, i'm sure i've used that method on the Wizard before too! Although I haven't hard reset my kjam since a few days after I got it a few months back so may be wrong ;)

With regard to the bootloader, there are simpler methods of getting other ROM images onto your phone (eg overwriting the files in the installer), again its not something i've needed to do recently so there may be a more common method now!
