Freedom Mini Bluetooth keyboard

Received mine in the mail today from Expansys US... It seems as though the Bluetooth stack in SmartPhone 2003 doesn't support the keyboard and there is no driver from Freedom Input at the moment to make it work so I have a paperweight on my desk.

I've opened up a ticket on their support site and hopefully something is in the works.. hell, I waited 5 months for it since it was announced, why not wait a little longer?

Anyone have any ideas? So far, one post in one other forum has the same issue I do and he reports that their support is clueless. (here)

It seems as though all I need is a Bluetooth HID driver but the ones included are for PDAs. The box shows no Smartphone 2003 devices but if I had known that they weren't supported, I'd have saved my $60. Hopefully they will make a driver, otherwise it goes back to Expansys.

Update: Just got an email from support at Freedom Input. They assure me that the drivers will be ready "within the next 2 weeks" and will be posted on their website.

That would be great since I'd rather keep the keyboard. Now all I need to do is figure out how to make the mounting clip work without smashing all the buttons on my SMT-5600.

Good News !!!

Looks like they have drivers for Windows mobile 2003 Smartphone devices which are running MS BT Stack:

http://www.freedominput.com/latestnews.htm

I tried them but for all of them it says installation failed as its not intended for this device ( Itried it on SMT5600 running both WM2003 and WM5) The only reason I could think of is SMT5600 runs Broadcom BT STack with original ROM so maybe thats why its not installing....

Can someone giv eit a try and let me know?

Thanks

I'm still pretty upset about the lack of drivers and the poor quality of their website. The president emailed me (I found his email in another forum) and assured me that drivers would be ready on the first of the year but I don't want to be stuck with this thing unable to return it to Expansys if that falls through.

That's for their fold up Bluetooth keyboard. The drivers for the Mini haven't changed since their release on the 20th.

The Compatibility Guide for this product now shows that it is compatible with the SMT5600.

Have you tried the new drivers?

Let us know how it works.

Well, how does it stand now in late January? Does the Freedom Mini work with WM2003 smartphones now?

This thing is still as useless in SmartPhone 2003 as it ever was because the drivers don't exist. I'm considering using it as a keyboard for my Media Center machine but even that is kind of a waste since I generally don't need to type into it and the remote keypad accomplishes that fine.

I've pretty much written it off and will toss it on to Ebay so that someone that has a supported device can use it. What an absolute waste of time and money. I was so excited that there was finally a mini keyboard announced, tracked it until it was available for purchase and now, what, two months later it sits on my desk? They promised the new drivers (assuming Smartphone 2003) would be "in the new year" but we're three weeks into January and still nothing.

Of course with my luck, as soon as I put it on Ebay, they'll release drivers the day after its sold ;)

Have you heard back from them again? I'm patiently awaiting the WM2005 drivers for my Cingular 2125!!

Much like you guys, I've been waiting for Freedom Input to make their Mini Keyboard MS Smartphone compatible. The latest news (well, yesterday's actually), quoted from their site:

Freedom Mini Keyboard

We are currently testing in house drivers for devices running WM2003 Smartphone Edition and for WM2005 PPC. I am hopefull that a release can be made next week.

Well, so am I. That'll be just in time for my birthday :)

Well it SEEMS as though Freedom Input has finally made available their Mini Keyboard drivers!

This one is for WM5 (but it seems as though they mean the PPC version, not Smartphone)

http://freedom.helpserve.com/index.php?_m=...=26&nav=0,10,11

This one is for SmartPhone 2003:

http://freedom.helpserve.com/index.php?_m=...=29&nav=0,10,11

I'm assuming that the SP2003 version will also work with SP2005 because the first link to the PPC version has instructions which say to enable the driver in the System tab which is a PPC thing. I don't have my keyboard here but I will give it a shot as soon as I get home.

The worst part about this is that since I've not been able to use the keyboard in the five months I've owned it, I've come to find out that I don't need it that much. T9 is annoying but it's built in to the phone and not some chunk of plastic that I would need to carry around with me that is larger than the phone itself.

Perhaps if Freedom Input would have released drivers earlier I might have pushed myself to use it. Now I feel like I might not use it purely out of spite. I've been waiting since September when it was supposed to ship, finally got it in December when it did ship, and now in April the drivers seem to be released.

Ok, I installed it.. the SmartPhone 2003 driver works in SmartPhone 2005. Once I figured out where it was installing the drivers (it dumps the files into Program Files and you need to install the driver by running a .cab on the device) you can configure the keyboard with the applet that shows up in the Start Menu.

Best part about the driver? When you power off the keyboard and turn it back on, you have to manually disable and reenable the keyboard from the applet!

It works, that's about it. This is a very sloppy driver and I would think that they could have come up with something better in the months and months they have been developing this.

I'm probably going to end up Ebaying this thing since it's more trouble than it's worth to drag it out, fiddle with the driver and then get to typing something. Well, at least they made good on their promise to get drivers out for SmartPhones... just took a few (5) months extra.
