O2 Online Upgrade

Just thought I'd de-lurk for long enough to give my experience of an O2 Online upgrade. Started a twelve month O2 Online 50 contract on the 14th January 2005 (£19 per month for 50minutes plus loads of texts). Got bill number twelve via email today, paid by switch online, left it half an hour and then called the upgrade number.

Got a very nice lady on the phone (Debbie) and I explained that I had no cash due it being Christmas time, and that I wanted to get an XDA Mini for free. She offered it to be at £109.00 (it's on the O2 website at £99 for all new monthly contracts)

No good, so what else can we do? I knew that needed more minutes on my contract as I am always over, so I wanted to upgrade to their Online Talker 100 (200 minutes, 150 texts, £25) and she said that she could so that with the XDA Mini at £109 and the line rental at £15 per month. Much better for me to have the line rental at £25 (some is paid for by my company) so I suggested she could give me the phone for free and keep the line rental at £25.

She put me on hold for a couple of minutes, came back and said that was okay and the phone would be with me in three to five days.

Only (minor) thing is that it's an eighteen month contract but then I was expecting that anyway.

All in all - a decent result I think.

Free XDA minis are 10 a penny at the mo. You'd have got a better deal, cancelling the contract, porting to a £2 PAYG card, then porting back on a new contract.

Bit confusing as I am getting the HTC Wizard with the pull out keyboard, and O2 have it their site as the XDA Mini, but others call it the Mini S - actually my order confirmation says Mini-S.

I couldn't go for a new contract really - been a hell of a bad year for my business (self-employed - now back in full time work) and would have failed a new credit check so I had to get as good as I could out of an upgrade this year!

Now to find out what my year old MDA Compact (in great condition) + 1GB SD is going to be worth on Ebay.

o2 wouldn't offer me a mini for less than £109 a couple of weeks back, been with o2 for years, bills of £22-25 for 12 months, last few have been £30-40. Wouldn't come close to matching t-mobiles web n walk either.

Having had some financial problems this year, I really didn't think I had much choice other than to upgrade. However - got my Mini S and been playing with it for a few days and it's too fat and I have doubts about the sliding mechanism and the stylus/silo lasting very long so it's going back under the 14 days policy.

Signed up to T-Mobile last night - confirmation email today that my MDA Compact II will be with me before 1pm tomorrow! Much better deal - £13/month for 12 months of 18 for 100minutes and 40MB of data - use more data than voice so this is great for me, and the MDA Compact II is a perfect replacement for my Compact that has gone on to a friend.

Just on a side note. Phone technology moves forward a step or so each 6 months on average, and the abundance of 18 month-by-default (especially on upgrades) contracts is doing my head in. You're missing on 3 gens of technology minimum if you get a brand new handset!

When my upgrade with Orange comes around in a few months i hope to be able to keep my current deal (120mins/3000sms/£20pcm) and get a C600 for free or on the cheap, WITH a 12 month contract! ;)
