In the event log, there are DCOM errors created when active sync attempts to load. Luckily i have a partition image of my drive at xp service pack 2 level without any windows updates installed. It seems to work ok at this point. If i install windows updates, the DCOM issue appears. I'd suggest downloading activesync 4.1 to see if that fixes your problem, also check the event log for DCOM errors.

I have to disable my Zone Alarm (free edition) otherwise I get the same thing - just hangs on connecting. Works fine with the Microsoft firewall of course!

Only guides for the paid for version of Zone Alarm - the free one works just as well but doesn't have some of the options needed. Adding the four processes that need to get through the firewall didn't help me at all. Having said that, I've not looked into it too far as I didn't know if I was staying with AS4 because I didn't know if I was staying with a WM5 device. Looks like I am now (though not the Wizard) so will look into it again.
Guest hunyango_uk Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 just had my vario for two days and i have no trouble syncing with pc eversince i installed the activesync, and even i sync it over bluetooth i have no problem at all, ah that's the beauty of wireless technology. :)
Guest JPo_23 Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 I'm having trouble synchronising my vario too. I use Sygate personal firewall pro, and I can't sync ( Activesync 4.1) when its switched on, even though I've set it to allow Activesync connection manager and Activesync RAPI manager. When I turn sygate off it works fine. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?

Guest JPo_23 Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 Would activesync 3.8 actually work with the vario?
Guest Tobers Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 Just been having the same problem with my O2 XDA Mini S. It was sitting on "connecting" for ages and never actually connecting. Using Activesync 4.1 by the way. I've now managed to get it to connect to my work PC. It would connect to my home PC but as all my contacts & schedule are on my work one it made things a bit pointless. I found that the Cisco VPN Client on my work PC has a "stateful firewall always on" facility. So, from startup onwards, the firewall is on and was blocking traffic from the XDA. I turned the "always on" to off, and the XDA connected fine. Prior to doing this I'd used "mxconfig.exe" to switch off anything that looked like a non-Microsoft firewall and any anti-virus, which made the connection work. I then gradually turned them all back on until I got to the Cisco VPN at which point the connection stopped working and the problem was diagnosed. Bloody boring though - been at it most of the day. Now I've got the f'ing 85010014 error! Aaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggghhhh! I've run Add/Remove programs to uninstall and then reinstall Outlook (doesn't need the original CD-ROM - just chose "update" for Office and remove Outlook from the installed components, reboot, and reinstall again. Still doesn't work. Then I've run scanpst.exe to repair my pst file - lots of probs found and repaired. Still doesn't work. Now running "detect and repair" (Outlook->Help->Detect and Repair) to see if that makes any difference. Jeez - what a pile of poo. It's only synchronising some data for f's sake. Microsoft should be shot! Will post back if it ever works....
Guest brykins Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 Would activesync 3.8 actually work with the vario? No - that's why I'd like to "upgrade" my MDA Compact II to WM2003SE so I can go back to AS3.8!
Guest Tobers Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 OK - it's working now. No more 85010014. Today, me and my work PC are plugged into the company LAN by cable. Yesterday I was at home and Activesync would not sync with Outlook offline. It wouldn't sync with it online either as I cannot run the VPN to get into the company LAN and have Activesync connect to my XDA at the same time. So, it looks like Activesync needs to have Outlook online if, like me, you are using a mailbox on the Exchange Server. Hurrah! :)
Guest welshgaz Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 I have a smiliar problem and I've posted in the Wizard forum, but for those who dont read that I'll summarise it. I've managed to get it to synchronise, but contacts just will not synchronise. They've never sync'd yet all other itmes sync just fine. I've tried deleting partnerships on both the laptop and the vario but still nothing. I've not got a firewall other than the basic win xp sp2 version. AS 4.1 is installed and the laptop is new so I've never used AS before on it. Unfortunatly my other computer is not working so I cant try it on that. The AS window says that it is synchronised even when I only select contacts to be sync'd, and it says this almost immediatly on connecting - even though it goes through the process in the status screen. On checking the AS options on the device later, it will show contacts to be greyed out so it can't be selected again. Help!! Happy New Year and all that Gaz
Guest breezy69 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 I had the same problem. Deselect contact under Tools>Options. Let the Vario sync and then go back and re-select contacts. It should sync all the contacts then.
