Thanks Liz <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Try taking the phone to as many bits possible without dismantling it and leaving it to dry for about 24 hours in an airing cupboard. It worked for me on one of my past phones, not perfectly but it turned on and worked, just couldnt get any signal. hope this helps, let me know how you got on pricey

Guest Tech Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 but you see - these are smartphones - not "dumbphones" like nokia :)

Liz (off to browse ebay - just in case....)

Liz (off to browse ebay - just in case....) Seen them go for as little as £75 on ebay! The MPX220 comes apart fairly easily - you can get it apart like this with little effort. Do you have access to an ultrasonic bath - eg do you know a jeweller etc etc? They are usefull for cleaning corrosion off. http://www.modaco.com/MPX220_diss_assembly-t228446.html Richard

Even the camera is working. Only thing that seems to have suffered is active sync - PC is telling me that "a usb device attached to this computer has failed" - that'll keep me occupied (and away from buckets of water!) for a while :) Thanks again for help Liz

The corrosion will be minor at the moment but even when you think it's dry and the phone is working, it's still eating away at the copper tracks inside the phone. Unless you do something about it, give it a week or so and suddenly he won't switch on :-( The corrosion that's currently giving a 'not recognised' message will spread to the other tracks around it and one day he won't wake up - the longer yopu leave it, the worse it gets. Now's the time to take it somewhere ( local independant mobile repairer etc etc ) and pay £20 to have it stripped and cleaned. Better safe than sorry. Or take the back off yourself and have a look. Just my opinion of course, you may find it's perfectly fine after 6 months, but if it was enough water to stop it switching on until you dried it out I think it will have done some damage. Richard

Thanks again Liz Don't worry, he'll be OK if you get him help now. The Carphone Whorehouse won't help you *at all* they'll just say it's water damage, and 'would you like to buy a new phone with insurance, as that would have covered you' - they are only interested in warranty repairs as they can bill them out at silly money, or in selling you a new phone. Your best bet would be to ask at a small shop / market stall unlocker - explain it's wet, still working but won't link to your computer and you want it checked for corrosion. Make sure they realise it's in working order as a phone, agree a price beforehand and confirm the condition of the casing with them. While you're at it, if your case is a bit tatty, buy a new one of ebay and have them fit it. Where abouts in the world are you? I may know of people in your local area - it's a small world for learning who the muppets are in phone repairs.... Anyone you know near you that you can ask? Richard

Guest Liz Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm in Manchester UK - I'm sure there must be something local. The case is fine, but looking at it, it will p'bly get a bit scuffed up in undoing it (fitting looks tight) so may look for a new one anyway (wanted the silver one in the first place). Just noticed the time's wrong on it as well :| so looks like your right and something's not at all well wid-da-Moby :D Thanks Richard, least I know I need to do something now... :) Happy Christmas! Liz Hi Liz, funnily enough, I'm not in Manchester, I'm in York, but I'm in Manchester 3 or 4 times a week. I also have silver mpx220 cases, and yes, it does look better in silver :) All the 'locals' I know who do repairs on Bury New Road in Salford / Prestwich *will* try it on as you're a lady. Sad but true. Only decent one that springs to mind is Lucky Mobiles, I've bought parts there but can't vouch for their services for repairs as I've never had to use them. There are lots of places in that area, and they can be a bit daunting so take a bloke if you can if you want to pop down yourself. I should be in Prestwich/Hulme/Didsbury/Wilmslow on Friday, PM me if you're about. Richard Richard

As for you lot with your wedding bells !! :D What can I say??? 'cept that *I* know who's going in the bucket of water next....and it ain't me moby again......! ;) Ash, if the hats black keep hold of it, coz I think there's a funeral on the way. Yes Moby is a very sad little phone, totally rejected by the Mother Ship (PC) and unable to communicate via BT he has become a land line, because I can only use him when the charger is plugged in...his battery dies in about 10mins flat (no pun!) I'm checking the insurance but its not looking good. The MPX is out of stock in the UK and the policy states "...or equivalent phone..." so only him who's b'day it is knows what they will send. I plan on putting the new phone (whatever it is) on ebay and buying a worthy replacement.....if I can do that. Humph - more paper work to look at.... Happy New Year - you, you, you - gang of reprobates !!! :D Liz :D :D :D

If you explain water damage, and depending on your policy, they may well replace moby *and* let you bury him. Sounds like there is a short in the power circuit - possibly same short causing both issues - and it should be an easy fix. What network / insurance do you have? Can you keep him alive a bit longer 'till the Moto Q comes out? Richard

Its on an O2 contract. (http://tinyurl.com/aazo5 - citymain.) I have to send the phone to them and pay a £25.00 excess - they look at him and decide if he can be repaired - or not. If not, they send a new phone if the model is still available or the superseded model if discontinued. Which is the tricky bit because Moby is still current - just not available in UK......as far as I know. Apart from the dodgy battery, and the none syncing, the phone works fine. I just cant do anything with it 'cep make phone calls when it's plugged in to the charger!!! I've ordered a new battery to see if that helps... Thanks for interest and advice Liz

Hi Just to update ... Citymain and /or Phones2u came through with full marks !! ;) Brand new Moby MPX220 arrived in the post today, and is happily charging away in the corner. Settings are all up the poll  but I'm back (or will be soon) fully mobile and can put the creaking old Nokia (Shock-Horror!!) back in the draw where it belongs. Liz
