Guest dculbert Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Firstly - I apologies if this is discussed and solved somewhere else because I have searched and didn't find it. I have a new C600, have installed activesync 4.1 and then 4.0 and back to 4.1. Phone is detected fine, can explore fine, but when comes to sync'ing gets to "Looking for changes" and hangs for approx. 5 mins then returns an error saying sync didn't complete, reconnect and try again. Have tried different usb ports - got errors when connecting, have tried a hard reset under the tutilidge of Orange TS, have tried sync'ing with media alone (get a message saying requires set up......am onto level 3 tech at orange and trying a few things. One interesting thing - when the phone installs, it installs a new LAN - If I go to Network Connections, it shows a new Local Area Network, enabled, and describes it as Windows mobile 2005 device! Not seen that anywhere yet! I'm running XP, Outlook 2003, have norton antivirus installed but have tried disabling it (well disabling autoprotect), have disabled the firewall, and kinda running out of ideas Have tried Bluetooth - but think I have the world's cr@pest bluetooth dongle in the world - tsk! Leave that one for another day I think... Any help is greatly appreciated!!!! And to think of the agro I went through to get this phone - haven't even started on Tom Tom yet!
Guest benwatt Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Take a look at the thread at http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=233490 In particular the Microsoft page about Firewall configuration may be of interest. Just turning off the autoprotect may not be a proper test to confirm that it's the firewall, but it almost certainly will be. The specific config page for your firewall software is at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/hel...ync/norton.mspx
Guest dculbert Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Hey Ben, Cheers for the reply - yeah I read that topic and didn't really get anything from it in this instance. The firewall I'm using is the windows firewall - the version of Norton I'm using is norton antivirus - therefore can't use that particular link....i think anyway - unless I'm being more dense than normal - which is a distinct possiblility
Guest dculbert Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Right here's a random development - if I get the connection sorted for the phone and unclick all the options - ie. calendar, inbox - etc - make sure nothing's checked - then it still says looking for changes - think this may discount Outlook!
Guest dculbert Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Right - further development - have tried it on another pc at home - that's never had activesync on it and works no problem - I installed the pc so has pretty much all the software that's on mine. Have disabled everything under msconfig to avoid conflicts and still doesn't work! I'm starting to think this is a 3.8 uninstall issue...... Anyone else having similar probs?
Guest SUKY Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 same here too activesync is all messed up also when install a new homescreen from coolsmartphone error message saying unable to install...and yes it was a Qvga homescreen
Guest benwatt Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Hmm, yeah could be a dodgy ActiveSync install. When I upgraded my iPaq to Windows Mobile 5 a few weeks back, once I sorted the firewall I was getting weird errors and it would only sync if I turned off the synching of the calendar. Eventually it was sorted by completely uninstalling ActiveSync, rebooting and installing 4.1 again, rebooting and then making sure that any remaining old Movile Device entries were removed before reattaching the device again (File > Delete Mobile Device until they're all gone). Maybe try that last suggestion first just in case that's all that's needed :)
Guest louisg Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Been having the same problem and it is definatly the firewall i found mine which is zone alarm you go into firwall - main and move cursor down to low and it works fine Louis
Guest dculbert Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 hmmm..... have totally disabled the firewall and still get the same results. The two pc's are incredibly similar - both running windows xp sp2 and office 2003 sp2 with norton antivirus and windows firewall. The only difference seems to be that activesync 3.8 was installed on one and not on the other. Have uninstalled 3.8, loaded 4.1, uninstalled 4.1, loaded 4.0, uninstalled 4.0 deleted all partnerships and loaded 4.1 and still nothing. I dread to think what's going to happen when I try connecting to a work's laptop - running 3.7.1 (only version supported by IT) and I don't have administrator rights! wonder if there's legacy files / settings left from Activesync 3.8.

I was stuck with a similar connection problem and I figured out after hours of checking, installing/uninstalling and (of course) browsing the net... The C600 and ActiveSync 4.0/4.1 use a new way of communication, that is through a "network connection". This is what you see when you connect your phone. A new device appear in the "Network Adapters" section in Device Manager sayin something like "Windows Mobile Based device...". Also a new network connection is shown up in "Network Connections" in Control Pannel. If you didn't already checked, go to that network connection, right click it and select "Properties". Then make sure that the following ARE checked (and nothing else): Client for Microsoft Networks, File & Printer Sharing for... AND TCP/IP. Without the protocol the phone IS recognized but is not communicating. TCP/IP setings should be left on "auto detect" no IP should be manually set. The problem is due to the fact that, after a reinstall of ActiveSync, the USB drivers are updated as well and those are the drivers for the simulated network card (used for communication with the PC). As you may know, if you reinstall the drivers for a network card, the device is installed but WITHOUT any protocol selected. All boxes there are un-ticked. Doesn't matter if you had 3.8 or not before.... Wanna check? At home you said it's working... OK. Reinstall ActiveSync... and it wont work. For me, Ive started with a fresh install of 4.0, it worked and after upgrading to 4.1 it didn't. Only after checking the 3 boxes in network connection properties. Hope it helps... Good Luck
Guest dculbert Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Hey Rapier, Thanks for the help!
