Guest kc1 Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Hello everybody Can anybody direct me to a guide to things that can be removed to save on memory on the phone? - both for for WM5 & SP5-specific things For example - how to get rid of all those useless images in the windows folder that seem to be write-protected? Thanks :??:
Guest nassersyed2 Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 I got rid of that stupid antivirus program and the generic i-mate games badgammon and that lines. i found those to be useless. what else did you do to free space? im trying to send/recieve mms messeges and it keeps saying "out of disk space to send/recieve. free up space and try again."
Guest kam_ Posted December 25, 2005 Report Posted December 25, 2005 Dunno how many times i written this but... 1) Backup your data 2) Update to the latest rom - NRE one if you only need UK english and US english or nordic languages. It seems to take less space. Otherwise update to the WWE one 3) Download the tweaks to move the IE temp files to the storage card 4) download the WWE software pack from i-mate, and install it to the SD card. now you'll find all the install files for the 'useless' programs that came with your SP5 in \Storage Card\Program Files\CDL Files. Install what you want (choosing storage card as destination). Then delete the CDL files folder if you wish. I advise not to bother with the antivirus, but the other stuff doesnt do any harm, and only takes a tiny amount of Storage Card space. I have 28mb free on bootup, and 24mb free after the cache fills up. No problems yet with low storage ;)
Guest kc1 Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Dunno how many times i written this but... Kam I've done all that except step 4, because I can't find the download on the i-mate site. :??: Under Club Support-> Updates/Dowloads, I see: • ActiveSync 4.1 then under 'Device Support' for SP5, I see: • Read the FAQ • Known Issues • View Product Details • Utilities • Operating System Upgrade and Device Customisations ...and I can't see it in any of those. Under Members -> Free Dowloads, I just see games. Anyway... ....that still doesn't get rid of cr*p like the splash screens, the 'angel', 'boy' and other pictures, and stuff like Pocket MSN 'Interactive', 'Bubble Breaker', 'Solitaire', the preloaded wav sounds. Can't those be deleted? I have 28mb free on bootup, and 24mb free after the cache fills up. No problems yet with low storage I also have 24 meg, but I do find my SP5 crashes quite easiliy when several things are open. Even if it didn't have performance problems, I would just prefer to get rid of junk that I didnt use.
Guest kam_ Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 its in 'Operating System Upgrade and Device Customisations' then click this link: Click here for the Operating System for English, Finish (suomi), Dutch (Nederlands), Norwegian (Norsk), Slovak (Slovencina), Swedish (Svenska), Hungarian (Magyar) and Danish (Dansk) Or here's a direct link (which shouldn't be breaking the rules since you'll need to log in to i-mate): http://www.clubimate.com/support/SP5/ROM/i...E_1.5.333.0.exe Alot of the other stuff you mention is in the ROM. If you have 25mb free, then the crashing has little to do with memory and more to do with the 'fresh' WM5 OS. I've found a bunch of bugs already - i guess it wasnt tested very well in a rush to get it out.
Guest gacajun Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 I am not absolutely positive about this post but think I am right (90% anyway) Instead of program memory I think you should be looking at storage memory under the System Info. I think you have to have more of this memory. I have 22mg of program memory left but have run into memory limitations as well. I deleted the "junk" off my SP5 and installed everything that I have on the storage card and now have 6.2mb of storage memory free. I think this is where the programs are actually loaded when they are run as applications and this is the working memory that is required. The more of this the better. Look at the amount of free storage memory as soon as you turn on your phone. Then run a few apps and go back to the System info tab and see how much you have left.
Guest kc1 Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 its in 'Operating System Upgrade and Device Customisations' then click this link: Click here for the Operating System for English, ...<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Kam - this is the OS, right? I found that alright, but not this mystery "WWE pack", whatever that is? gacajun, would you mind listing what you deleted to get the free storage memory up to 6.2mb. I opnly 1.7mb free at the moment.

The Storage Memory is where the applications that you install resident on your phone are stored and the program memory is where they are loaded when running so I was wrong in my first post. I deleted the anti-virus software and all of the supplied games from the SP5 and loaded any additional apps on my storage card and I have 6.2mg free. I configured PIE to store its cache, cookies etc on the storage card so I don't have to worry about PIE filling up my storage memory.
Guest kc1 Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 Kam - thanks. I has assumed (wrongly) the WWE was a different version of the OS with English only. ...I deleted the anti-virus software and all of the supplied games... <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I can't seem to get rid of Bubbles & Solitaire - they seem to be delete-protected - how did you manage that? I did however manage to delete a few of the pictures in Windows folder and, bizarrely, for some of those I wasnt able to delete, I did manage to overwrite them with smaller versions (e.g. a simple greyscale version of the HTC logo splash screen makes it 10% of its former size.) If I have time, i'll see of it works for any of the other images in the Windows folder.
