Wired Stereo Headset Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I'd like to be able to listen to music in stereo on my MDA Vario, but answer the phone if a call comes in. It came with a wired headset that does this, but its pretty horrible quality and not very comfortable to use.

From the sounds of it, stereo Bluetooth headsets are not ready as of yet.

Has anyone found any that work better and aren't stupidly expensive. I'd rather pay less than £50. Less than £20 would be good.

If there aren't any good alternatives with a microphone, I may just get some normal stereo headphones and a 2.5-3.5 mm adaptor and forget about the headset bit until stereo Bluetooth ones get better.

I would recommend Seidio - they're not cheap but they are good quality.

If you scroll down to the bottom of this page you will probably see all the other threads discussing this issue :)

Thanks for that. I tried searching for +wired +headset and it didn't find any of the Seidio threads

They seem to be ~ £20 including delivery from this US ebay seller

I might also get some normal stereo ear pieces, dig out my soldering iron and see if I can use them to replace the headphones on the headset that came with my Vario.

They are charging $60 for something that is $30 including delivery to the UK from Ebay. I do like the look of the isolator ear pieces. I've asked the Ebay vendor if they can supply them too. I'm not in a desperate hurry for them.

I ended up getting some Sony MDR-EX71SL headphones (£22.99 with free delivery from 7dayshop). They seem to have a decent reputation for sound quality. The problems with them are that the cords are not particularly robust and a bit short. I don't mind the cord on the headset that came with the Vario, I just hate the earpieces.

Anyway, first I removed the rubber ear piece.

You need to open up the ear piece by sliding a knife around the edge of the rubbery stuff nearest the ear. This is the same bit that forms the cable shroud. With mine, there was glue for about 1/3rd of the rim.

Then you need to prise the metal speaker out of the plastic. I did this with a knife. Snip off the wires for the Sony leads. Thread the wire from the headset through the cable shroud. With my MDA Vario headset this cable has a woven outer sleeve. I wrapped that in a little sellotape to stop it from unwinding as I pushed it through.

Once the wire is passed through, tie a knot in it to give some shock protection. Trim the ends of the wire and spread the two ends apart. With the Sony earpiece wires one was green and the other was bare copper. The headset wires were red/green and green so I joined the green to the green and the red/green to the bare copper terminal. A small soldering iron will help.

I'm actually gonna go for the seidio retractable headphones (possibly the noise cancelling in ear ones). According to Seidio:

Dear Customer,

Our headsets for Treo 650 are compatible with the O2 XDA mini S. You can go to our website and check the headsets under Palm Treo 650.

If you have more questions, please, let us know.

Thank you for contacting Seidio.

Best regards,

SEIDIO-EUROPE

Which is good news as they have had very good reviews on the net. Nice to know that there are quality replacements for the substandard headphones that is supplied!

Cheers,

Fuzzmo.

Your my hero. Like an idiot (really not like me) I ordered the SENNHEISER MM50 4-pole, 2.5 mm mini jack Connector Headset ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16826106023 )from Newegg and only one earbud had sound, and the mic didn't work. A quick check to the side of the box shows that it's compatible with a few manufactures (non of which are HTC). Long story short I am on my way to trying your method with the Sennheiser buds cause they are better quality and usless to me otherwise.
