Guest FrankyG Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 Hi, Just venturing into GPS navigation, would welcome suggestions on which software you would recommend for outdoor pursuits, in the UK? Initially, it would just be for hillwalking I use it for so I guess topographical map software would be what I'm looking for... all suggestions welcome though! Thanks Orange M5000

Guest spangelsaregreat Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 Hi, I use Memory Map on my MDA Compact and it is great. You can get both 1:50000 and 1:25000 OS maps for the whole of UK. It allows you to create and follow routes, it records your track and the PC software give 3D walkthroughs of your routes. I use it on my mountainbike and find it an excellent tool for navigation. Regards
Guest spangelsaregreat Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 (edited) Sorry, Should have shown you some pictures to. Here is my MDA Compact with Memory Map running and here is a 3D image from on the PC and finally my on bike setup using a waterproof case (you may want to consider this for your hillwalking exploits). Guest tripdog Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 just read this post, I think memory map is the one for me ps where did you get that waterproof mda holder, is it compatable with M500
Guest spangelsaregreat Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 (edited) Hi, It is from here. At only £9 or so it is a bargin. Used in all of Scotland's wildest weather with no problems. The JAM is probably about the largest phone you could fit in it so a M500 should be fine. Guest scott_b Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Just a quick question with regards to the GPS software... Do u not need to buy a GPS module for the phone or does it work with just the correct software?

Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 You do need a GPS unit as well otherwise you will not know where you are :D Word of advice, while the GPS software etc is handy to have, always make sure you take a real map and compass as a backup, and make sure you know how to use them. ;)
